Over the years ~ In what position have we had the best players?

Post by DARLODAH » Sun Mar 17, 2024 12:06 pm

My vote would be goalkeeper, by a country mile?
Ray Wood ~ Tony Moor ~ Jeff Wealands ~ Mark Prudhoe ~ Kasper Smichael ~ Jordan Pickford ~ Matty Young?

Are there any others? Andy Collett ~ David Stockdale ~ Fred Barber ~ Mike Pollitt ~ Sam Russell ~ David :Preece now added to list.

Or how about another list for another position?

Yes, off the top of my head, Collett, Preece, Gerkin, Moilanen. We've had some great goalies.

ps and Stockdale.

Fred was an amazing keeper. It’s a toss up between him and mark Prudhoe as the best I’ve ever seen in a Darlo shirt.

I reckon a high proportion of clubs in the lower leagues would say goalkeeper has traditionally been a strong position.

Most clubs have one first choice keeper, which means there are fewer opportunities for goalkeepers to get regular game time than other positions - so you get relatively better player dropping to lower levels to get game time. Similarly, they have one fixed position - they can't fill in or adapt to other positions to get more games like other players can.

Surprised Sam Russell hasn't had a mention. While I didn't think he was all that in his first spell with us in League 2 (many did), he was outstanding for us in the Conference/FA Trophy period.

We will be playing at the arena again next season - fact.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

add David Preece.

but top of the list has to be Fred Barber - saw him pull off some of the best saves I've ever seen.

Special mention for Carl Shutt 😀 My favourite emergency goal keeper. He pulled on the goalies top 2 or 3 times and didn’t stand for any nonsense.

Andy Lonergan, not here for long but had a extensive career.

Andy Oakes was a decent goalkeeper before losing his place to David Stockdale.
"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Would have loved to see David Speedie upfront with Marco.
Alan Walsh on the wing to provide for them both.
