Darlo v Bradford PA
Darlo v Bradford PA
Time to get the season started tomorrow (we hope) feel like the mood would really be lifted by three points and dare I suggest a clean sheet.
With reinforcements at CB not arriving yet I'd stick by what I said in the other thread. I'd put 5 at the back bringing in Beeden and telling him to challenge for everything in the air, let Taylor and Storey cover in behind that. Smith and Griffiths showed in pre-season they can put quality crosses in the box and then it's a case of getting men in and around Cassidy to challenge for those second balls and knock downs from the delivery out wide. Further forward let Hatfield play as the most advanced of the midfield three he's looked a goal threat in our opening couple of games. With Charman and Cassidy the focal points of the attack. On the bench you have options to put fresh legs at wing back in Hedley and Hope with Rivers or Dos Santos available if you want to change the shape during the game.
--------------------------- Taylor ---------------------------
----------- Taylor --- Beeden --- Storey -----------
Griffiths ------------------------------------------ Smith
---------------- Purver ------- Wheatley --------------
------------------------- Hatfield --------------------------
--------------- Cassidy ------ Charman -------------
Subs: Hope, Hedley, Rivers, Dos Santos, Nelson

If I was the Bradford boss and had seen our first couple of games I would stick big Adam Nowakowski up front as often as possible. The £1 a week man isn't afraid to go in where it hurts but hopefully AA has come up with a cunning plan for us to deal with threats in and around the box this time.

A cunning plan might be to offer him £2 a week to play in our defence!LoidLucan wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 5:56 pmIf I was the Bradford boss and had seen our first couple of games I would stick big Adam Nowakowski up front as often as possible. A grand total of one change today.
George Smith in for Hedley. Storey stays in the side after being publicly called out by Armstrong. Taylor also at centre back.
By keeping faith with the side, if this goes wrong today AA will have handed his critics lots of ammunition.

Not sure he had any other choice after failing to sign any defenders. Lexus isn’t the answer currently, I can only assume he was signed with the view to teaching him how to defend at some pointDarlogramps wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 1:12 pmA grand total of one change today.

Can’t disagree with any of that. Beeden’s pre-season displays don’t exactly give confidence he’s the man to solve our defensive problems.
But….AA was really critical of our defence and is now relying on the same CB pairing. Indeed after promising changes, the only change is to bring in our full fit first choice left back, which would have happened anyway.
If Storey and Taylor have another stinker today, AA will understandably receive a lot of flak. And to some of our fans, Beeden will appear Maldini-esque.

One of Nasser Hussain's favourite quotes is 'You always become a better player out of the side'. Very apt here.Darlogramps wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 1:42 pmCan’t disagree with any of that. Beeden’s pre-season displays don’t exactly give confidence he’s the man to solve our defensive problems.

Hooray, 0-1.
Are we going down?
Are we going down?
Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
We have a clear weakness in the team and the recruitment we have made, however, this is only our third game after an extremely disrupted pre-season.
We have to give the players time to gel without further diminishing their confidence but I can understand why folk are worried as we have been abnormally poor defensively.
Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
Which teams are genuinely worse than us this season? Where are the points coming from?
Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
We were poor most of last season, have a weaker team this year, and are being beaten by teams who have historically been poor. It is very concerning.Beano wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 2:36 pmWe have a clear weakness in the team and the recruitment we have made, however, this is only our third game after an extremely disrupted pre-season.

Yes, very concerning. Genuinely think this is the worst squad we've had at ths level. Don't now how it's happened.MB86DFC wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 2:39 pmWe were poor most of last season, have a weaker team this year, and are being beaten by teams who have historically been poor. Still not as bad as Gloucester today. 9-0 down against Chorley.

Much better second half, alarm bells back in the box for me.

Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
First half was as poor as it gets, we only looked better when Beeden came on , second half was better, but we still look disjointed.

Easier to play well when the other team is holding a 2-0 leadquakersfan wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 4:37 pmMuch better second half, alarm bells back in the box for me.

Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
Yep, defence looks much more solid when the opposition has absolutely no interest in attaking us.
Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
Worrying pattern emerging in our games so far this season. Poor first half, although we did score first at Curzon, then losing at half time before a token rally in the later stages of the game. As others have said it is relatively easy to look ok when the opposition is in front and more content to hold what they have than risk pushing forward too much. We need to become more competitive from the get go and put teams under more pressure. Not sure what our home record is in the league in the last 12 months but I know it is poor.
I usually reckon it takes at least 6 games before it is possible to assess how we are likely to do. The bad news is that things could get tougher from here on in. Next up is Blyth and they are going well and around half of their team has a massive incentive to want to do well against us. We then face a lengthy mid week trek to Brackley which is always a tough place to go before we entertain York who just seem to be hitting their stride.
On small ray of hope is that we are not getting tanked and are only losing by the odd goal and we know there are specific weakness that need to be addressed. We can and will improve I am sure. Even if David Wheater is only 80% fit lets get him in training and try to get him up to match fitness ASAP.

Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
We dominated possession today and should have got got an equaliser when that fantastic chance presented itself. But of course we shot ourselves in the foot yet again with two more defensive lapses. You can't give anyone a two goal start like that and clean sheets seem a million miles away. I do think our first points will not be for some time yet

Re: Darlo v Bradford PA
We, ie our management team, have to be 100 per cent sure that Wheater has regained his motivation for the game and has overcome his 'niggling' injury before we sign him. He will be high budget and the signing of a similar experienced central defender last season didn't exactly work out too well.......
