Community Fun Day
by Scott Thornberry - 22nd July 2012
On Sunday September the 2nd Darlington Football Club will be holding a Community Fun Day in the market place, Darlington.
The aim of the event is to firstly have fun, but as ofshoots it is hoped to promote the club within the community aswell as raising funds for the club.
There will be a host of stalls - many very simple ones, aimed at kids with the aim of them having fun - old fashioned stalls, like they used to have at local fetes, like throwing bean bags at tins of beans, picking "lucky" straws, "Adopting" a bear. But we will also have a juggler, clowns, (hopefully), a stilt walker, face painting, getting your nails done for the girls, "keepy uppy" for the lads. We also will have kids sports, with prizes for all, whether they win - or come last. It's about making kids laugh and smile.!!
On a bigger scale, there will be a sponsored Bungee jump next to the Pease Statue, with a penalty shoot put nearby. Also a bouncy castle and a climbing wall in the Market Square.
For the bigger kids we will have a Tug of War competition in the Central Arena (Teams of 8 - only £10 a team), hopefully with sponsored trophy and cash prizes for the winners - we expect Uncovered to enter at least 2 teams - If we get lots of entries, there will be different categories.
One of the highlights will be the stocks, where you will be able to throw wet sponges at whoever is in the stocks. Already we have Bill Dixon, Council Leader volunteering to get a soaking, as well as Ray Simpson and yet more well known persons to be announced. We will be looking to DFC 1883 board members to either volunteer, or preferably be sponsored to sit in the WET seat.
Bungee Jump : this will be held next to the Pease statue. We want people to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship to jump. If not they will need to pay £30 to jump. Sponsor money MUST be handed in on the day. There will also be a special event "Toss the Boss", where employees will be able to sponsor their boss to be "tossed off" the platform - more details to follow.
Wet sponge throwing : We already have pledges from Bill Dixon, Dennis Pinnegar, and other "personalities", to sit in the stocks and get wet sponges thrown at them - but we need more - how about a "vote for who you want to put in the stocks thread" - sponsored of course, on the board.
