Darlo Dog Is Dead!

Darlington’s mascot, Darlo Dog, will bid farewell to Quakers fans on Saturday after announcing his retirement! Darlo’s popular furry friend has announced his retirement from professional football and will stand down from being the club’s official mascot at the end of the season – he’ll say goodbye to fans at Darlington’s last game of the season at home to Dagenham on Saturday.
This news opens up the door for a new mascot to take the reins and join the club as they attempt to win promotion back to the football league at the first attempt.
Darlington FC are now calling on all budding designers to submit their drawings to the mascot design competition and the winning design will be selected as the Quakers’ mascot for 2010-11 and will start their new role next season.
And the winner will be there to see him at every home game with a family season ticket up for grabs for the winning design.
“Mascots are often based on the history of the club, the nickname, the colours, or sometimes nothing at all!” said Damon Shaw, the club’s community liaison officer. “Your inspiration can come from anywhere.
“The canvas is blank for you to come up with an original new mascot, one that you think will help the club win promotion straight back into the football league next season!”
To enter, simply send in a drawing of your mascot idea with your name, address, email address, phone number and age and you could win FOUR season tickets (2 adults and 2 children) worth £698.
The club will then judge all the entries and the winner will be sent off to be made in time for the new season.
Deadline for entries is Friday June 25, and they must be sent to Damon Shaw, Community Liaison Officer, Darlington Football Club, Neasham Road, Darlington, DL2 1DL, or email them as a JPEG to damon.shaw@darlington-fc.net with the subject MASCOT DESIGN and the above details.

Have to say I could happily live without a mascot - it could be one of our defining trademarks. Personally I think all this forced bohomie and Americanisation (especially when done in such a piss poor way) is embarassing in the extreme. Or am I just a grumpy old b******?If we must have a mascot why not Mr Invisible. I could forsee endless fun at presentations, cheerleading and team introductions etc. It could be our own private joke at the expense of visiting fans. Am I possibly losing the plot here?
If we must have some bloody stupid entity then Mr Q was at least connected to the club tradition and less embarrasing than pairs of magpies, swans, malformed imps etc
