COOPER TO BE NEXT BOSS

Cooper To Be Next Boss
Originally published: 28th June 2010

Another amazing 24 hours at The Arena and the latest news is that Mark Cooper is set to be named manager after Ryan Kidd stepped aside just over a week after taking over the reigns.

In a turbulent two weeks The Quakers are set to have had 3 managers, but at Darlo that is probably nothing out of the ordinary and once again Raj Singh seems to have acted quickly and appointed a manager who was favoured for the job when Steve Staunton was sacked last season.

Coopers Managerial Background:

At the start of the 2003–04 season Mark was appointed player/assistant manager at Tamworth and moved up to manager following the departure of Darron Gee for the 2004–05 season.

During his time as Tamworth manager, Cooper managed to get them into the third round of the FA Cup in two consecutive seasons. The first time they played against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium and they managed to force a replay at their own ground, where the game decided on penalties. The following season they played against Norwich City and lost 4–1.

Tamworth's league form did not match their cup exploits, however. In the 2005–06 season Tamworth finished second-bottom of the Conference, and only survived when Canvey Island resigned from the league. The following season went little better, and on 24 January 2007, he left Tamworth F.C by mutual consent, with the club bottom of the Conference table.

On 16 May 2007, Cooper was appointed manager of Kettering Town.He had a successful first season with the Poppies, winning the Conference North title with a margin of 17 points. In the 2008–09 season, he guided Kettering to the FA Cup fourth round, a joint record for the furthest the club have been in the competition, where they faced Premier League team Fulham. He also guided the Poppies to 8th in the Blue Square Premier, completing a successful return to the conference.

After days of speculation, on 13 November 2009, Cooper agreed in principle to a three-and-a-half year contract to become Darren Ferguson's successor as manager of Championship side Peterborough United, following the departure by mutual consent of Ferguson on 11 November. He was appointed as manager on 14 November.

I feel a bit sorry for Kidd, obviously something has upset him but maybe he was having second thoughts about quitting? Only to find Raj had been on the phone to Mark Cooper already?

I'm not sure about this appointment if it happens, mainly because of the staggering circumstances of the last 2 weeks.

I'm happy enough with this :)

He has a pretty good record of cup runs too - Something that could come in nice and handy financially.

I'll reserve judgement on Cooper, if indeed it is him who is appointed until fifteen or so games into the season, as I always do with a new manager.

As good a move as we could expect in the circumstances - and it works for Cooper too, as no other jobs will be coming up for at least a few months and he;'s been out of work for a while.

I had hoped for Cooper before we got Davey so this works for me. Now let's just get everything confirmed and try to settle things down for a few weeks. Get pre-season going properly, get the extra players he needs in, and have a proper go next season.

If he hangs around for fifteen or so games without bailing out then he'll do for me, regardless of results!

A decent appointment no doubt, but I've learned from the experience of the last year not to jump to immediate conclusions. Lets see what kind of a team he puts together first, and then take stock of where we are by Christmas.

Bloody quick though, almost as if he was already waiting in the wings. I also wonder what has inspired his U-turn about moving his family up here. Perhaps he thought he was on to get another job which fell through or something...

I'm pleased with Cooper, but I refuse to get overexcited after recent events. His record with Kettering was excellent, hence why he got the Peterborough job, so I am sure he has what it takes to win promotion.

Perhaps Kidd resigned because everyone on this board claimed they were "behind him"? Perhaps he got a little paranoid?

I'm pleased with Cooper being in line for the job. Is there any word on who his replacement will be?
Quakerz - 28th June 2010 21:54:08

Very happy with this. Though I do wonder why we can't just be a normal, average club without all the turmoil

 It's funny because it's probably already happened...

What this all boils down to is this: has he got time to assemble a promotion-winning side before the season starts? the jury is still out but we will all know the truth by the middle of September
