Never liked Thatcher as a kid growing up - believing all of the small minded shite about how we're so hard done by up north, which still perpetuates to this day.
But yeah, history has been kind on her now we can look back in hindsight, there's some damn good stories to read.
Today you can cut me in half and I'd bleed blue.

I liked her. (I like strong people who are prepared to stand up for what they believe in).
She is castigated for the miners strike but had little option but to beat them down once they took the government on.
I still wonder why there was so little mention of the fact that half way through the strike, when the miners were all begging for food for their starving kids Scargill received a £320 interest free "loan" from the union to buy a bungalow. That man and his cohorts were so corrupt it beggars belief.
I am NOT a Tory by instinct.

Absolutely fuming RE North East Council Elections...
Always been Labour, but couldn't bring myself to vote.
Arrogance from local Labour Council coupled with the disdain shown towards the core working class in the North in regard to Brexit - can't bring myself to vote tory so where do I vote ??
For Labour to lose councils such as Darlo , Boro, Hartlepool and Sunderland … Yes SUNDERLAND possibly the most staunchest Labour area in the country is unfathomable for those of us who grew up with Labour being at the heart of working class communities.
At National level I can't see me voting Labour when the likes of the self -loathing Emily Thornberry gain prominence

Mrs. Thatcher hated football and its fans. Compulsory Identity Cards for football fans (including Division 4) were legislated for and ready to go when Lord Peter Taylor of Gosforth published the Taylor Report after Hillsborough demonstrating what a ridiculous idea it was and she had to back down. Had it gone ahead it would have stopped any casual fan turning up at Feethams without having previously applied for and paid for membership in advance. It would have knocked 100s off the gates.

She used that pipsqueak Colin Moynihan to try and push the membership cards scheme through - complete bag of shite

We should have ID cards for everyone, not just limited to football supporters.

Serious question, WHY should everyone have to have an id card, and what info would you have on it?
I find the whole idea abhorrent and reminds me of WW" times.

Just tattoo a barcode and number onto everyone's forearm.

And of course, we do know which Prime Minister wanted to introduce mandatory ID cards for everybody, don't we?
And it sure as Hell wasn't Thatcher.

Not connected with Mrs T, but it was great to see the Labour council fall into second place in the local elections on Thursday. Hopefully that'll mean they're blanket support for DMP will be ended.

If you'd drawn a line in 1980 between the Wash and the Severn Estuary you'd've probably divided the population of the country in two.Ghost_Of_1883 wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2019 4:38 pmNever liked Thatcher as a kid growing up - believing all of the small minded shite about how we're so hard done by up north, which still perpetuates to this day.

27 million north, and 27 million south.
In the four years between 1979 and 1983 over 100,000 people lost their jobs as a direct result of Margaret Thatcher's Friedmanite economic policies.
North of the line it was over a million.
The woman hated the north, and had declared economic war on the working people of the UK in order to promote the casino culture which has persevered ever since.

I think if the deadwood had been in the south she would have made the cuts there. If you were around at the time it was obvious that things had to change, we were becoming a banana republic.
Agree it or not, UK got its pride back and we had a real leader in charge.

What evidence do we have that she hated the north though? She was born and raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire wasn't she. That put's her in the North according to your map.grytters wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 2:49 pmIf you'd drawn a line in 1980 between the Wash and the Severn Estuary you'd've probably divided the population of the country in two.Ghost_Of_1883 wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2019 4:38 pmNever liked Thatcher as a kid growing up - believing all of the small minded shite about how we're so hard done by up north, which still perpetuates to this day.

Which deadwood would that be? The deadwood for example making steel in Consett, Sheffield and Wales amongst others, or building ships on the Tyne, Wear and Tees (and Clyde).Feethams 1966 wrote:I think if the deadwood had been in the south she would have made the cuts there. Whether heavy industry had had its day in the UK can be debated but communities were left rot and people told to 'Get on their bikes' and go to where the jobs were - i.e. the already expensive and over crowded South East.
Thatcher may have been a strong leader but was all about everyone for themselves, survival of the fittest. If you didn't have the skills then you were fucked. She didn't care.
That people held parties when she died should speak volumes about her.

This (I think) five part documentary on Thatcher that’s currently being shown on BBC 2 shows/reminds us how magnificent she was. She makes current leaders look like schoolchildren

She was the best thing that ever happened to the Green Party. Single handedly destroyed most of the industries which caused pollution.

Re: 40 years ago today . . .
I hope she's rotting in some hell-like afterlife for all eternity .

Re: 40 years ago today . . .
Consett is certainly a nicer place to pass through these days, used to be rank with dust off the steel works.
Had it stayed open it would have been shut down for pollution reasons eventually.
