Re: McMahon signs
Good signing. A specialist right-back that will allow Hedley & Atkinson to be used in the centre.
I can imagine, with him also taking up the Head of Academy role, that it will be fairly cost-effective for the club too.

Re: McMahon signs
Good to add another experienced head to the squad. I wonder whether he'll be first choice at right back or someone who can fill in as and when while providing some influence behind the scenes.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Re: McMahon signs
Great signing for the club, welcome to the club Tony.
Re: McMahon signs
Interesting signing. I wonder if he's Academy coach first and player second, or if he's going to be pushing to play every week. Can't seem to find any stats for 19/20 for him so no idea when he last played regularly, but either way, having him in and around the squad will be a huge benefit. Between him and Hunt we certainly now have the experienced heads we missed at times last season
Re: McMahon signs
See he is also going to run the Academy as he has done his coaching badges and has previously helped out at Boro. Could be a good deal for both parties.

Great signing will add a lot of experience on and off the pitch.

Re: McMahon signs
Do you reckon he’s signed instead of a midfielder, as Hedley or Atkinson can move into the midfield.

Re: McMahon signs
We have so many options Rivers could drop into the attacking midfield role If required, sure he did this on a couple of occasions.
Re: McMahon signs
This is the million dollar question. AA wanted an attacking midfielder, so that may be more Hedley than Atkyjohnnylewis1k89 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 6:03 pmDo you reckon he’s signed instead of a midfielder, as Hedley or Atkinson can move into the midfield.

OK. Own up. Who did this on Wikipedia? Look at the first line.

At last Wikipedia gets something correct !
Re: McMahon signs
Great signing which works for both player & club. AA shows how persuasive he can be & all we need now is clearance for the season to kick off in front of a decent sized crowd. No doubt DJ still working hard on this.

Re: McMahon signs
He didn’t play at all last season following his release from Oxford in September 2019. We tried to sign him around about that time last year but I think there was a contract issue which precluded us from doing so (Oxford retained his registration maybe?).al_quaker wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 5:42 pmInteresting signing. Re: McMahon signs
Just wonder if this is AA's final signing other than a goalkeeper, or if he still intends to bring in another attacking midfielder?.Not sure on this but the squad as it stands looks really good to me and all areas are very well covered.Very impressed with the lads we have brought in plus Atkinson and Holmes returning from injury.

Re: McMahon signs
I think Alun has said he would like a squad of 18. A goalkeeper would push us up to that mark.QUAKERMAN2 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 8:05 pmJust wonder if this is AA's final signing other than a goalkeeper, or if he still intends to bring in another attacking midfielder?.Not sure on this but the squad as it stands looks really good to me and all areas are very well covered.Very impressed with the lads we have brought in plus Atkinson and Holmes returning from injury.

No point in signing an attacking midfielder at the moment as McMahon has freed up Atkinson & Hedley to play in midfield.
Re: McMahon signs
McMahon was at Scunthorpe for quite a bit of last season (says Wiki but confirmed by a Scunny fan I know).

Re: McMahon signs
He wasn’t at Scunthorpe last season (i.e. 19/20), but was there in Jan & Feb 2019 on loan.
He was released by mutual consent in September 2019 by Oxford & I don’t believe he has played since.
A good signing regardless, it wasn’t that long ago he was playing for Bradford in League 1.
Re: McMahon signs
So that's a selection of Hedley, Atkinson, Wheatley, Hatfield and Reid. Not sure how much guile there is in there, but a pretty decent selection of midfielders! Be interesting to see what system Armstrong is going to go for next season.divas wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 8:00 pm100%johnnylewis1k89 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 6:03 pmDo you reckon he’s signed instead of a midfielder, as Hedley or Atkinson can move into the midfield.

If that's it for outfield players, then we are looking pretty strong all over and on paper I think improved from last season. Plenty of depth in all positions and we've added some experience which we missed last year. Reasonably confident we will be improved defensively (assuming a competent goalkeeper arrives). Hopefully the additions of Maguire and Charman and Holmes (sort of) can help us create more and score more too. Looking forwards to the season starting (wherever that may be!)
Re: McMahon signs
On paper looks like the strongest squad we have assembled in our time in NLN. We all know matches are not won on paper you need a good team spirit the ability to gel into a tight unit and of course a bit of luck. With AA at the helm and his ability to motivate and mould a team together there are reasons to be optimistic for a good season. Just hope we get the chance to prove what we can do.

Re: McMahon signs
If the season had resumed I believe he was one the surprises AA mentioned in his interview he expected to bring in to make the final push into the playoffs, wonder what the others were. Like Hunt he might not play every game (first two months are going to be Saturday/Tuesday games) but jumping straight into FA Cup it is important we can stay in the completion as long as possible and with Justin playing in front of McMahon could be exciting times if we start on fire

I suspect Alun will still go with his trusted 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.al_quaker wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 8:55 amSo that's a selection of Hedley, Atkinson, Wheatley, Hatfield and Reid. Reid & Hatfield can chip in with the goals from midfield, as they have done historically at this level. It was always going to be difficult to recruit better than what we have in the centre of midfield (i.e. a Kieran Green or Alex Pattison).
Like you say, a solid goalkeeper would just top this summer’s recruitment off. We are one signing away from a top 7 finish, IMO.
Re: McMahon signs
I dunno about that - that first season in the division we were very good. We had some excellent players- Beck, Thompson, Gillies, Turnbull, Falkingham. Going forwards we were exceptional -we scored 89 goals in the league. This current squad will hopefully have the edge defensively though, as we conceded a lot of goals that season (67)!
We got 76 points in 42 games that season (which in new money is 1.81 points per game - enough for joint 3rd last season). We will be going well to match that effort, although playoffs should definitely be the target with the squad assembled.
Re: McMahon signs
What that squad has in that first season was momentum gained by steam-rollering the divisions below. That carried us to victories we probably never should have had. We’re slowly starting to build some momentum again with as settled a side we’ve had since that season. Mad to think we’ve been in NLN now longer than it took to get here from the NL.
Re: McMahon signs
Yes thats a fair point. If memory serves me right, we started off really well, dropped off over the winter, but then finished really strongly too. Shame, in a way, that the wheels fell off at the start of next season, but ultimately it was for the best as it was unsustainable. We've been through some painful rebuilding, but it seems like the club is in a good position now to incrementally improve on last season, which should see us as genuine playoff challengers throughout the season. It looks that it could be a very competitive division though. Plenty of clubs seem to be, on paper, making some very good signings.divas wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:20 amWhat that squad has in that first season was momentum gained by steam-rollering the divisions below.
