3 players released

Post by D_F_C » Sat May 11, 2019 2:02 pm

Maddison, O'Hanlon and Henshall all left after contracts expired. No shock really. Wonder if Alan White made the decision?

Also, Jordan Nicholson has been retained for another year (along with Trotman) which we knew about.

Good news in both

So who is under contract then?

I make it...

Trotman
Burn
Galbraith
Ainge
Wheatley
Nicholson
Thompson
Glover

I'd try and keep Holness and Elliott if possible, and that's about it.

A fair old rebuild required but at the same time there is good quality in most of the few contracted players so a decent base to build from.

We need...a new left side, a good holding midfielder, a competent keeper, a central defender and 2 decent forwards.

Agree it's not a bad start.

Thompson & Nicholson if playing guarantee 20 goals (10 each).

Defence has Galgraith, Ainge and Trotman so not that much work to do their initially.

Goalkeepers seem like we could get one on loan, I would look at Hemming from Boro or someone of that equivalent, saves us money and work trying to find one.

Strikers are the key for us, we really need a goal scorer (say guaranteed 15) and a big strong hold up player (chips in with about 10).

Whoever the new manager is he'll need an eye for a good player and good contacts because we'll largely be having to do what should have been done properly last summer.

The list doesn't mention Wilson Kneeshaw. Does he have a berth for next year?

Kneeshaw doesn't have a contract and one rumour is that he is out until October/November.

Any decision there would be with new manager but if the injury front is true we can't really spend money on someone who may miss a 1/3 of the season and any FA Cup time.

Hopefully Wheatley will be getting his hernia op pronto so we can see the best of him next season. He's a very good midfielder but was badly hampered last season.

In a way that's a good thing for us. Nobody else will take him on so you can probably get him in on a 'trial' again for a couple of months before Xmas

Hopefully scope for the new manager to bring in a decent amount of players plus loans. The defence does need sorting out as our goals against column was shocking last year however it improved towards the end of the season. We need a midfield spoiler as we were too light weight, hopefully we will have a chance at re-signing Holness but no doubt his agent will be trying to sort him out somewhere.
Hopefully Burn will take a second chance with a new manager with both hands.

I see on twitter that Burn is under a new sports management company. Really strange how he was given a two year deal, one year with an option for a further year would have been sensible. Another Caton scenario, I doubt he will get anywhere near the first team at the moment.

Burn should never have been given a two-year contract, especially when it was him - allegedly - that approached us to sign.

Ainge should never have been given a two-year contract after his serious injury either.

benefit of hindsight? IIRC both players seen as positive signings when they joined?

Most, understandably, thought they’d be world beaters at this level given their prior experience.

If, after we'd spent a decent wedge of cash on Ainge, we'd only gave him a 1 year contract, at the time I reckon there would have been outrage. Obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing, as it hasn't particularly worked out.

The decision to give Burn a 2 year contract on the other hand....

We have better players at the club whose deals didn’t extend beyond this summer, yet those above mentioned did.

Burn’s career has declined since Boro released him, from the Championship to the NLN, and mid-table York/Gray didn’t want him back after his loan-spell. The club were bonkers to give him a two-year deal, but that was probably because the management team went on record and said he was as good as Josh Heaton!

As for Ainge, well it didn’t take a genius to work out that he scored all those goals for Harrogate (pre a pretty serious injury I might add) aerially. Yet Tommy predominately stuck to his 5 at the back despite having an excellent crosser of the ball in Thompson. Never mind, two-year contract and a hefty transfer fee.

He tried 4-4-2 at some points during the season but the squad was that shockingly imbalanced it couldn’t work. We had Henshall on the left incapable of having an effect, Ainge & Hughes incapable of running and Burn who couldn’t jump. You could then have Thompson on the right but how do you then shoe-horn in Nicholson who is technically excellent?

He actually did fit them all in at some point and basically played a 4-1-3-2, horrific to watch and no solidity to it whatsoever.

He also sold Gillies who registered about 9 goals & 10+ assists in the 17/18 season, and replaced him with Henshall who never looked like scoring and got 1 assist in about 24/25 games.

Maddison cost us about 10/11 goals across the season taking in to account his individual errors, and he only played 28 league games!

Apologies for ranting, I’m trying to touch on what a fellow poster put on here about there being no due diligence done to our recruitment. It’s spot on.

There needs to be better due diligence undertaken in terms of handing out above one year contracts. We might be stuck with Burn on the wage bill next year, and i don't get the sense of even a remote possibility he will come good.

Ideally, we need one year with one year options, rather than two years, which is putting us on a hiding to nothing if it goes wrong. All the same, TW hasn't left us with anything like the problems MG did.

Potential transfer fees for outgoing players depends on how long they have left on their contracts. If you only have players on one year deals, then when/ if they are sold, you will get less money than if they are on longer contracts.

Its a difficult balancing act between trying to secure players to longer deals to get the most money if you sell them compared to the risk of being stuck with them if they flop.

I am guessing, but if players are being signed from outside the region, they are likely to be wanting longer rather than shorter deals.

Clubs are damned if they do and damned if they don't

You are guessing because the players from further afield were largely on one-year or one-year plus option deals. But then again that's what comes of dipping your oar into a club that you know precious little about.

Rubbish!!.Spen knows everything about our club, even down to the size of our begging bowls, which are MASSIVE.But they would have to be MASSIVE to get nearly 100k in them, wouldn’t they Spen.

Good post. Our recruitment was horrific in the close season. I never rated Gillies as any more than a talented yet inconsistent player who only turned up when it was warm, but Henshall was a massive, massive downgrade. Likewise Burn was a big downgrade on Heaton/Brown, Maddison was a big downgrade on Bartlett/Pears, Hughes was far too fat to replace Turnbull in midfield, jesus christ it was bad wasn't it?

Gillies was a far better player than he was given credit for. Another who became the scapegoat when things didn't go right, as per the only turned up when it was warm guff.
