The keys/institute closing?

Post by shildonlad » Tue Feb 12, 2019 9:59 pm

read on the mardi gras page on facebook that the keys/institute in town is closing. Anyone know anything about this? I know the institute darlington page now displays its address as yarm. Would be a shame, only club I’ve been to in town in recent times, maybe only one left.

Sorry reflection on the state of pubs and clubs in the area. I came through the town centre after the York game to get a taxi home and the driver was grumbling that the town pubs used to be packed on New Years Day, this time they were deserted. If the Keys is closing down, sadly it won't be the last!!

Being fair, a lot of the pubs in the town are doing quite well.

Im sure a few are doing well but most likely those that do food and have day time trade which is what the keys does too.

As SL says those that do food may be doing ok, but a lot are struggling. I went into the Green dragon before the poolie game and it was deserted, they must be losing a fortune, which they won't make back at weekends.

The Keys is shite, that may be why it is (alledgedly) shutting. Overpriced poseur bars always crash in the end, in towns like Darlo.

Plenty of pubs are doing well in the town centre, I was out on Saturday and the Hole in the Wall, The Gate and obviously the likes of Steads, The Tap and Tanners had plenty of people in. And plenty of choice for damn good, reasonably priced drinks in all of the above mentioned.

The keys over priced, its cheap compared to alot of places in newcastle. I think its more a nail in the coffin for the night club part the institute closing as it leaves inside out as the only nightclub left in town.

Most of the pubs do well one day a week, a lot really struggle for the remainder and a good few don't even bother to open midweek, as they know they will lose money.

Don't talk crap   Plenty of pubs like the Tubwell Tap, Golden Cock, Steads etc do well most days of the week as there is a demand for drinks. Even the Woollen Mill and to an extend Boot n Shoe/Joseph Pease do well.

I've been in town for meals and seen these places busy during the week, to say it's only busy 1 day a week is ridiculous.

So is it just the club that has closed, as went past the other weekend and the bar seemed to be open, although not very busy?

Read a article online think it was from northern echo that the lots closed, both owned by same firm. The club would be shut during the week only opened after 10, twice a week. I sadly was not a regular due to been in chesterfield but went a few times and thought both places had good facilities. Sad the institutes gone but the flea put inside out keeps going
