Love the pic on the official website of Thommo signing his new contract squeezed in amongst crockery and what looks like a pressure cooker! A metaphor? ;)

It's great that he knows how close he is to becoming the all time leading goal scorer for Darlo and for what he has done for the club for the last 6 years, makes him a legend.

Don't you just love non League football! I wonder if any Darlo player over the years has signed a contract in and even stranger place, though admittedly Thommo was in the "Board Room"?

At this level do we have to feed visiting directors and officials? If so I suppose it makes sense to do something that can sit and stew until required with a minimum of intervention.

Although a Taylors pie, mushy peas and gravy might have been more culturally relevant.

Getting players to sign a disclaimer before they eat stew is not a good advert for our catering.

Plymouth's parŕrrsty shop also great. Exeter City had the same brand at games, but Torquay Utd had some cardboard tasting rubbish.

Some of these never heard of, what a record Maurice Wellock had, especially for us! See below what wikipedia said about his career

Wellock was born in Bradford, Yorkshire,[1] where he attended Drummond Road School. In 1916, he became the first Bradford boy to be capped for England in a schoolboy international.[3] He began his senior career with hometown club Bradford City.[1] He played for their first team in the wartime leagues at the age of fifteen,[4] but never appeared once the Football League resumed after the war.[1]

He had joined Halifax Town by 1919,[5] and made his league debut in the 1921–22 season. He scored three times in 33 games for Halifax before moving to Blackpool in 1923. He was not a regular in the Blackpool side, playing 27 league games in which he scored seven times,[1] and moved to Oldham Athletic in February 1927,[6] scoring six goals in just five league games,[1] including four on his debut in a 5–2 win away to Grimsby Town.[7]

In June 1927, he joined newly promoted Torquay United, playing in Torquay's first ever game in the Football League, a 1–1 draw at home to local rivals Exeter City on 27 August 1927.[2] He spent just one season with Torquay, scoring three times in 27 games before joining Southern League club Peterborough & Fletton United.[1]

In 1929, he returned to the Football League with Darlington where he played regularly as a centre-forward, having played mainly as a defender with Torquay.[citation needed] He scored 71 goals, including five in one game against Rotherham United in 1930,[8] in 104 league games for Darlington, finishing his career with a further 21 goals in 82 league games for Halifax Town.[1]

Not very up to date, as Thommo doesn't appear in that list. I've supported Darlo since 1974 and I only remember Walsh and Sinclair. It just goes to show that any decent strikers don't hang around for long, which makes Thommo's efforts even more commendable.

Rob you'll be old enough to remember most of those players!!!

So continued looking on Wikipedia and below is career of Jerry Best, these guys are not mentioned in any best of teams as no one now saw them play!

Jeremiah 'Jerry' Best (23 January 1901 – 18 March 1975) was an English football player who began his career in England before moving to the American Soccer League. He led the league in scoring in 1930. In 1931, he returned to England where he finished his career. He was born in Mickley, England.

Best began his professional career in December 1919 with Newcastle United. He played only two games before being transferred to Leeds United in July 1920 for L100. While he began the season as the starting left inside forward, he lost his position to Basil Wood.[1] He left the team in 1921 and spent several years playing non-league football before moving to the United States in 1924 to sign with the Providence F.C. of the American Soccer League. In his first season in the league, he scored twenty-goals in twenty-nine games. In 1925, he moved to the New Bedford Whalers remaining there for the next four seasons. In 1929, Best played two games for the Fall River Marksmen. He then jumped to the Pawtucket Rangers for the remainder of the season. In the summer of 1930, Best rejoined the Whalers, leading the league in scoring with thirty-five goals in twenty-seven games in the fall 1930 season.[2] In 1931, Best moved back to England, signing with Clapton Orient for two seasons. In 1933, he transferred to Darlington where he became one of the club’s all-time leading scorere.[3] He finished his career with Hull City in the 1936–37 season. 1937-1938 Hexham F.C. 27 appearances 14 goals

Did not realise Lance Robson scored that many, what a character, part time as he was a dentist in town with 2 practice's,used to arrive at Feethams in a yellow E Type Jag, hard as nails, always winding up defenders, remember him giving a young Bobby Moore a really tough night when we beat them 3-2.Sadly had a fall and passed away some time ago, but had a big heart and very popular with the fans.
