In an attempt to help fans with getting to Shildon I have dug out the following. Please bear in mind that I know less than sod all about the bus service but the stuff about trains should be cock on!

1) Trains

On a Saturday, based on the new timetable valid from 14th May 2012 there are two trains we can get to Shildon for a 3pm kick off:

Darlington 10:52 - Shildon 11:13
Or
Darlington 12:54 – Shildon 13:13

On the return there are trains at:

Shildon 18:07 – Darlington 18:28
Or
Shildon 19:30 – Darlington 19:51

On a midweek, assuming a 1930 kick off, the trains are as follows:

Darlington 17:26 – Shildon 17:47
Or
Darlington 18:54 – Shildon 19:13

On the return there are trains at:

Shildon 21:15 – Darlington 21:36 (this is the last train & it is unlikely you could catch this one without leaving early!)

Fares:
Adult return (Shildon) £3.50
Child return (Shildon) £1.75
(railcard discounts are available)
Northern also do what they call a duo ticket. The Duo ticket gives you one adult return train ticket, plus a second adult return for half the price when two adults travel together and return the same day with Northern Rail. It is valid on the Bishop Auckland line any time after 0930 on a weekday and at any time on a Saturday or bank holiday. It is NOT valid during December for some reason! Duo tickets can be purchased from the ticket office at staffed station. They may also be purchased on-train from conductors but only when you board the train at an unstaffed station or when the ticket office is closed.

Latest connecting trains with the 12:54 from Darlo are (from selected places)

London Kings Cross Depart 10:00 - Arrive Darlo 12:21
Birmingham New Street Depart 09:30 - Arrive Darlo 12:13
Manchester Piccadilly Depart 10:27 - Arrive Darlo 12:30
Newcastle Central Depart 12:17 - Arrive Darlo 12:45
York Depart 11:58 - Arrive Darlo 12:30
Boro Depart 12:22 - Arrive Darlo 12:54

Walking to the ground seems ok and it about 1.5 miles.

You cross over the line and follow the National Railway Museum path towards the top end of the site ( not the Museum - unless you want to appreciate some pre match railway heritage!) onto Hackworth close, right at the top onto Alma Road, follow that straight ahead onto St Johns Road, follow that on to Central Parade to the roundabout with Main street, left there onto main street, under the arch way and then right at Bargin Booze onto Dean Street

2) Bus

It looks like Shildon is served by 3 Arriva bus routes from Darlington:

1/1b - these buses leave central Darlington at either 35/05 minutes past the hour and arrive at Shildon (King William pub) at 07/37
return services are at 59/29 from main Street and arrive in Darlington at 31/01

X1 - these services depart central Darlington at 15/45 minutes past the hour and arrive in Shildon Hippodrome at 38/08 minutes past the hour
The last return are at 1721 arriving in Darlington at 17:21

5/5a These services depart Darlington at 01/31 minutes past the hour and arrive at Shildon, King William, at 52/19.
This service returns at 39/08 minutes past the hour and arrives in Darlington at 26/58 minutes past the hour.

3) Car

A short 20-25 minute journey from Darlington

Directions: along the A68 & A6072 until you get to the big roundabout at the bottom of the hill next to the old railway works (now Hackworth Industrial estate irc), right onto the B6282, left at the Masons crossing roundabout onto Byerley Road, up to the next round about then right onto Main Street, turn left at Bargin Booze onto Dean street and the ground is 100yds on the left.

Parking will be fun but I am sure someone local can offer some advice. When i went to the ground we parked in a street near by.

Nice work in any case MKDarlo.
Hilly can plunder the bits he hasn't already got and all lock this thread to encourage related chatter back to the sticky.
