I'm off to the Races on Saturday coming at York, and was just wondering.

Is it worth it, any good?

My wife and I have been a few times and always enjoy ourselves. We only ever go in the cheap 'seats' though, so I can't really tell you what it's like on the other side of the track, but friends of ours have had a good time in the County Stand in the past too. It's a bit pricy to get in there, mind!

I've never been to York, but am fairly regular at Sandown, Newbury, Ascot and go to Cheltenham for a day of the festival each year.

The racing is a great day out, whether you follow racing or not. A word of warning though - take what cash you can afford to spend, and write it off for the day. If you come back even after your food, drink and bets, you've had a good day. If you come back in profit, you've had a great day!

Are you coming down by train?

If you are, I'd recommend you get on one that gets into York at least 45 minutes (an hour's probably better) before the first race, as that should give you enough time to walk from the station to the racecourse, get in, find somewhere to Park yourself, peruse the race guide & place a bet before it gets underway.

Also, if you're planning on going in the Enclosure & it looks like it might rain at some point during the day, it's probably worth coming prepared, as there's next to no cover there unless you hang around down in the concourse.

Knowing Andy, it would be best to leave more than 45 minutes to walk from the station.

what we do on the big meetings is set off from bishop about 8-30, get into york races car park/field about 9:30/10, open first can 5 mins later then chill. let everyone else get stuck in traffic, because theres one road in,one road out, and if you leave it too late its bumper to bumper.

Ah, Magnet Cup day. Full, and i mean full of geordie dickheads. Used to love it but the place is just full of wankers.

Tip for you Andy, dont go chasing favourites cos yorks traditionally a favourites graveyard. Double figure odds and smaller stakes should be the order, especially if the goings soft as its bound to be.

Can't promise I'm on an all day session with old watch and you'll probably have left by time I get out of bed on Saturday but I always enjoy a days racing.

I don't know how you bet but some advice stick to your maximum each race never chase your money if had losses. Pick an amount you know you can afford lose over the 7 races, so if thats say £70(£10 a race) stick to it as I said dont chase losses thats most peoples mistakes. If you know nothing about horses(not saying you don't) then maybe pick a reasonable jockey or trainer and go for his/her rides for the day, can't say it will be successful but there's nothing worse than backing a jockey for first couple races going against him then he wins at good price. Luca Cumani has few runners on Saturday with Kieran Fallon on board, Cumani has always done reasonably well in handicaps (John Smith's Magnet Cup is a handicap) He runs Danadana in the Magnet a horse which goes better on a left hand course(York is left handed) It has done well in the North when raced up here, in fact has better strike rate. Most of its wins have been with Fallon on board. He rides it Saturday.Though finishes better on firm ground which may be only thing against it on Saturday.

Forget danadana it been pulled out going must be against it Cumani still runs Kirthill , Fallon rides that now but its form over last few years not that good 6 wins in 30 and 9 places so has 50% place rate.

I quite like Kirthill, but off form a bit so I'll probably avoid.

Hope you have a better day than I did. Didn't have a winner. And if you followed Cumani you had 2nd winner if you followed Fallon you had first 2

I had 3 winners, sadly they were in a 4 way double @ 20p line and only netted me £36

Marwan Koukash had a good day
