Yeah I agree. But against crap full backs hopefully he can just run past them and put the ball in the middle for OX, Welbeck and Young to score tap ins

Fucking hell. I remember having an argument with crazy Ted about how s*** Greece are and that they would bomb out of the competition, but he wouldn't accept it. Seems I was right.

I've bagged Greece in the work sweepstake. Hoepfully the useless coonts bomb out completely and I get the £2 prize for the worst team in the competition.

It could be worse: I bagged Ireland.

Gebre Selassie and Hübschman got the assists for the Czechs. Rosický was hauled off at half time

that's right. I am actually quite a fan of Rosicky. Interesting that when he went off yesterday, Czechs didn't look the same team.

Hummels has made 1 error...that's it. Trust an english supporter to then label someone for that!

Letting van persie onto his left foot is suicide if you show him down the right he looks so much less dangerous!

getting a similar feeling about Germany as there was about Spain a while ago when their stars were all coming of age. So many good players coming through that all know each other so well.

Oh shut up man. Now you're just desperately looking for anything to "prove me wrong" since you can't bear the fact that I was right and you were wrong.

Hummels was quality all season for Dortmund, and he IS a quality defender. Although you'll never accept it now as that will mean accepting that you were/are wrong. Which you are.

Group C just got interesting. Assuming Spain beat Ireland, a 2-2 (or any higher scoring draw) in the Spain v Croatia game would guarantee they both go through no matter what happens in the Ireland v Italy game.

I was embarassed for Ireland tonight. Not a patch on the Irish teams of old which usually had 2 or 3 top class players.

There was a huge gulf in class out there and it really wasn't much of a contest. Raises the question of why for the next tournament we'll have a 24 team tournament - feels like we'll just end up with more group stage whipping boys.

Yep, credit to Darlo George for his shout on Walcott earlier in the thread. Plenty of spirit at least. I saw Ukraine and they were dreadful so the chances for England are good. Sweden were a better side than I thought. Can we really persevere with Johnson? Has Walcott ever played full back?

An entertaining game tonight (well, mainly the second half). Walcott gives us more going forwards, Carroll played well, Welbeck was a bit anonymous but his finish was sheer class (if he meant it...). Some poor defending from us, and wtf was Isaakson doing for Walcotts goal!!? Who would people drop for Rooney?

We should qualify for the QFs now. That would make the tournament a reasonable one. Anything more than that would be a bonus.

Johnson is calamitous one minute, and making game saving challenges the next.

England's answer to Matt Clarke.

Fantastic post that. Couldn't sum it up better myself. Where Johnson lets himself down is his positional sense. He occasionally loses the plot. The first Sweden goal and then late on getting in the wrong position when ollsson cruised past him. An enigma.

Are we giving enough credit to Sweden? I thought some of their play in midfield was quite neat and tidy at times. Elmander was their weak link.

I like Seb Larsson & Källström can be a quality player, but Elm's pretty average and Anders Svensson must be on the verge of retirement now.

Olof Mellberg's beard was as superb as usual though.

I'd take Carroll out for Rooney, if we're going to take anyone out. Carroll had a good first half, but was poor in the second and gave away a completely unnecessary free-kick for their first goal. Both strikers tracked back well and won the ball off Swedish midfielders on plenty of occaisions.

I also think a Rooney/Wellbeck partnership will have more impact than a Rooney/Carroll partnership - they know each others game inside out from playing together at club level for starters.

What is clear is that Hodgson picks the players needed to suit the tactics he wants, he doesn't just base it on who played well in the last game. Hence why Oxlade-Chamberlain made way tonight for Carroll.

The reason we won't trouble the best teams is that we always seem to have that 20 minute spell where the team goes awol and gives complete control to the opposition. Between the first Swedish goal and Walcott's equaliser we were awful, resorting to hoof ball and completely lacking in ideas. Gerrard frustrates me as he's capable of picking a great ball like he did for Carroll's goal, but also when he gets desperate resorts to Hollywood balls every time.

Last but not least, Terry and Lescott were nowhere near as solid tonight as they were against France. Maybe it was down to less protection, I'm not sure. But they need to fix it quick sharp.

I've been disappointed by Ashley Young so far tbh. He should've had Granqvist and Branko Lustig on toast tonight, but instead he just kept on losing the ball. Perhaps Rooney coming back 'll bring out the best in him again though.
