For the first timein living memory, every England player sang the National Anthem today.

Perhaps Roy Hodgson has instilled some patriotism into our egos?

Then the camera panned to David Beckham and Bobby Charlton - shame Charlton didn't feel able to join in........

I know mate its unbelievable, maybe if Charlton had shown as much patriotism as the current crop he might have won a major cup...

Let's face it, God Save The Queen is a bloody dirge.

It was Adem Ljajic of Serbia - packed off by the otherwise level-headed Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Hate the tune and I hate the lyrics but then I am a republican.

Jerusalem has already replaced Land of Hope and Glory as the Commonwealth Games English Anthem. Jerusalem is crap and the athletes don't know the words, only posh rugby players know them!

God Save the Queen is a fantastic English & British anthem because it gets up republicans noses.

Republicans have an anthem called the red flag. Labour sing it at the end of their socialist conference each year.

Republicanism isn't the preserve of the left. Most people who believe in democracy tend to see how ridiculous hereditary privilege is.
Also, God won't save the queen, because god doesn't exist.

God Save The Queen is good, but it's the British National Anthem. Which makes Jocks & Taffs pretty stupid when they boo an anthem which represents them (that said I despise hearing the EU anthem which supposedly represents me, but I won't get started on that one!).
Jerusalem is good but too long for a national anthem.
Land of Hope and Glory is the natural choice, it's recognised to an extent as England's anthem, the words are appropriate for an anthem, maybe originally about Empire but now just interpret it differently, it's about social and cultural influence as much as anything, and anyway, national anthems are meant to be a bit jingoistic!

Certainly in the states, republicanism is a badge of honour among the right. I'm centre right (moving left) and I have no truck with the royalty at all.

I think God Save the Queen is absolutely shite. It's a terrble boring dirge. Now the Italian anthem by contrast is quality. Wish we had something like that.

I object to the concept of royalty on intellectual grounds, but a part of me would far rather have the Queen on our cash than Blair or Cameron.

I love the monarchy. The fact that she can say no to the latest chinless wonder and bring a constitutional crisis about keeps our minoritially elected "betters" from implementing their most outlandish fuck the man in the street ideas at bay!

As for a national anthem I would have the angry mob by the kaiser chiefs!
