Re: England squad - who would you take?
Strong rumours on the world of Twitter that Joe Cole is to be taken!! Bookies have also slashed the odds on him going into 1/9!! Interesting one, If he has managed to get himself fit he will still be one of our better technical players, Meant to have had a decent season in France.
Re: England squad - who would you take?
forgot he even existed...apparantely he has been playing really well in France so could be a good shout. Did Hodgson take him to Liverpool or was he already there before Hodgson got the job?

Lescott has been awesome and very consistent with Man City this season. Why would some people not take him?

Based on his sheer ability to create goals/chances from nothing. Lambert will do a job in the premiership if he's in a decent side. I cannot believe people are banging on about taking Sturridge and Carroll - what's that based on? Having a few goals in the premiership this season?Spyman wrote:Based on what? We have a fair few better options than a player who hasn't been tested for even a season at the highest level.walshys_wingman_11 wrote:Lambert would be a bold pick.....but it would be a right one.
In the same kind of vein I also think that taking Grant Holt would be a waste of a space.

I'd rather have someone who's been prolific in the Championship thanks.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
has he!? i always think he just looks slow. Think he has been helped by Kompany saving his skin on a few occasions just like Jagielka used to do at Everton.
Re: England squad - who would you take?
Lescott is awesome, correct. Him and Ferdinand to start for me. I wouldn't bother taking Terry. Far too disruptive.Darlo Fonz wrote:Lescott has been awesome and very consistent with Man City this season. Why would some people not take him?

Erm, no. We have much better options available.Darlo_George_96 wrote:Also would any1 take Grant Holt? Been in great form this season
Re: England squad - who would you take?
But creating chances from nothing the the Championship, against Championship defenders, is considerably easier than doing it against Premiership defenders and International defenders.DTID wrote:Based on his sheer ability to create goals/chances from nothing. Gabbiadini created chances out of nothing for us in Division 3. That doesn't mean he was International quality when he played for us. If Lambert can do it again next season, then fine, he'll deserve an England call.
Carroll scored 17 goals in Newcastle's promotion season. Sturridge scored 8 goals in 12 games for Bolton last season and another 11 for Chelsea this season.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
So why does someone like Andy Carrol whos only got 6 goals in 35 games or Peter Crouch whos only got 10 goals in 32 games deserve to go ahead of Grant Holt whos got 15 in 35 games?DarloOnTheUp wrote:So?Darlo_George_96 wrote:He's the 2nd top English scorer in the premier league this season...DarloOnTheUp wrote:Erm, no. Re: England squad - who would you take?
Because it's more than just a goals competition. We want the best overall players, and the best balance. Holt can only be considered as a target-man and we have better options available.Darlo_George_96 wrote:So why does someone like Andy Carrol whos only got 6 goals in 35 games or Peter Crouch whos only got 10 goals in 32 games deserve to go ahead of Grant Holt whos got 15 in 35 games?DarloOnTheUp wrote:So?Darlo_George_96 wrote:He's the 2nd top English scorer in the premier league this season...DarloOnTheUp wrote:Erm, no. Carroll only has 6 because he was off-form earlier in the season, but he's being considered now because he was immense for the last few games and overall he's a better player than Holt. Plus he's young and still developing.
Crouch I wouldn't take, but I'd still pick him ahead of Holt.
We will take four strikers and Rooney, Welbeck, Carroll and Sturridge are all better overall players than Holt. Then we have Defoe, Crouch, and Bent all BEFORE Holt.
My first choice four have to go. They are the best four.

I'd also like to throw into the hat Scott Sinclair and Tom Cleverley. Although I'd probably pick Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of Sinclair.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
IMO the goalkeeper situation after Joe Hart is pretty scary.. If he gets injured
Only really Scott Carson (crap) & John Ruddy who are playing top flight football and are 1st choice or aint internationally retired.
After that its David Stockdale 2nd choice at Fulham ,Robert Green playing in the championship and utterly crap
KInd of worrying

Re: England squad - who would you take?
Yes but towards the end of the season, when Carroll's form picked up, he showed how he is a better player than Holt.Darlo_George_96 wrote:But Holt has been playing better than Carrol this season
Plus Holt is 31 and Carroll is 23, so Holt will not get any better whereas Carroll has potential to improve.
Re: England squad - who would you take?
THIS is why England have failed I'm every major competition. Managers have been taking the "better" players (I.e. those who had done well a season or 2 ago). The manager should be taking our in form players. Therefore Holt should be in the frame. This is why the likes of Terry and Lampard aren't dropped. They're in the squad by reputation.DarloOnTheUp wrote:Because it's more than just a goals competition. We want the best overall players, and the best balance. If Holt can score all those goals for Norwich, think of how many he will get for England.
I would just like Roy Hodgson to mix up the England squad a bit and do what no other manager has done in recent years.

Ah yes, that's what will win us the competition: picking Grant Holt. Some of these comments are laughable. Holt would be a waste of a space.DTID wrote:

If you're talking about form then Carroll has to go ahead of Holt.
And how do you think these "better" players get these reputations? Think about it.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
Carroll will go.
Not because he's a particulary good option, but because theres fuck all else and he plays for a big club.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
I'd take Carroll. He's had a decent end to the season. Also, he has age on his side, unlike Crouch and Holt. We aren't going to win the Euros, so let's try and develop some players who might develop into a decent team for the next couple of euros. So I'd take the likes of Carroll, Oxlade Chamberlain, Cleverley, Jones, Adam Johnson etc. Complement them with the established players, and lets try and develop a decent squad going forward.
It's a shame Wilshere has been injured all season. I think him and Cleverley, along with perhaps Rodwell/Jones could be the basis of a good midfield 3 for years to come.

Re: England squad - who would you take?
I think Cleverley will go on to be a big player for England, but he's been injured for most of the season and only managed a dozen or so games.

True, and I can fully understand if he misses about because of it. I'd take the gamble, but then I'm not under intense pressure to try and get the squad selection right!!
Re: England squad - who would you take?
It might depend on Parker's fitness, and whether Scholes is under consideration.al_quaker wrote:True, and I can fully understand if he misses about because of it. I'd take the gamble, but then I'm not under intense pressure to try and get the squad selection right!!

As for Joe Cole, I've always rated him, so if his form has been good I'd have no qualms with him going. He's been as good as anyone for England over the years.

Cleverly is a good shout. Out of all the squads picked above, very few have a midfielder who will break up play. A lot of 'wingers', Walcott, Johnson, Oxlade, Milner, Young and so on (I'm sure I've missed a few).
We really need Parker to be fit and I'd also consider Barry/Cleverley
Up front Rooney, Welbeck and Carrol are a must.
I'd take Terry too, I don't think we have much option.
