We have noticed an increase in spam this week, we're doing our best to get rid of it asap, but we have day jobs.
I've mentioned it to Mikkyx tonight and he's going to install some anti spam measures this weekend.

And then they will find a way around THOSE and the arms race will begin anew.

phpBB has several of these available as part of it's install. All of them have been cracked. Even the Q&A option which asks a question / answer I can set is crackable because the spambots can Google the answers. They're clever.

Bit random though but how about….

Put a link to a youtube video which contains only one random word, this word is like a password. The question can be “what is the word in this video : www.youtube.com/xyz123.etc.”
Then they simply input the word as an answer and get access.

Would the spam bots be able to get around that?

[If this works I want the intellectual property rights but grant the use to Uncovered ;) 8-) ]

Mikky are you sure it is bots googling answers to crack the captchas?

I have a suspicion, what are the chances that members of this board have their PCs as part of bot networks. And thus all attempts to restrict entry if futile as they are getting the answers to website captha's and questions relayed continuously.

I'd like to report lo1234 as being an advanced spambot. I've suspected this for a while, and now think the posts in this thread admitting to finding fellow spambots funny and demonstrable knowledge of spambot networks are the smoking gun.

don't know a) if this will work or b) how easy this would be to set up...

To authorise an account when first set up. What if there were two seperate e-mails sent which contain two seperate parts of a password - each part could be generated from a list of ex darlo players maybe - or an auto generated mixture of letters & numbers.

when an individual first logs in their first password will be a concatenation of the 2 individual password which are sent - and they can change it after their first log in.

don't know if a bot would be clever enough to read both emails and push the passwords together?

As much as I admire your ideas, im sure the guys will just be looking for an 'off the shelf' solution rather than building a velociraptor safe one like you're suggesting.

problem is off the shelf can cost money, and will get broken eventually - the more people using a solution, the more tempting it is to create a way to break it...

Erm, an off the shelf solution in this instance will almost certainly be open source. A bespoke solution like you're suggesting, even if we code it yourself, won't be "free".
It is an interesting idea, but I have a hunch its complexity would turn away as many fans (some of whom aren't especially computer literate) as spam bots.

Could my idea above work?

I think it could be simple (to set up and use) and cheap.

They seem drawn to this thread for some reason, it's by far their most popular target!
