Forgotten New year day fixtures

Post by Mister e » Fri Jan 01, 2021 6:01 pm

As we enter a new year I was reminiscing about some festive fixtures in years gone by and an excellent fightback game in 1974 sprang to mind which never seems to get a mention in despatches Reading were the visitors to a chilly feethams smashing us in the first 45 minutes and leading through a Steve hetzke goal at the halfway stage. However we turned it round in the second period with two of the finest goals ever seen at feethams. firstly Don burulaux driving home from the edge of the box and then Gordon catterill doing a Matt le tissier esque flick over a visiting defender before volleying home into the top corner Reading played at elm park in them days and were also nicknamed the biscuit men owing to the town being home to several bakeries.Peek freans and Jacobs spring to mind.

New Years Day 1983, Bootham Crescent; York City 5 Quakers 2. A great game and a very misleading score line. York were top at the time and soon scored - more home goals were expected but Tony McFadden equalised directly from the kick-off with a solo run and for a while we made a game of it with Alan Walsh dominating their back line and Denis Smith bawling out his defenders. They got a couple more then McFadden scored the goal of the game with a lob from distance and we pushed for an equaliser before two late goals put a gloss on it for them. I think we hit bottom soon after that game but somehow got away from trouble, once Freddie Barber got into the team, by the end of the season. Anyone know what happened to Tony McFadden?

Not one I quite remember but the stand-out scoreline from new year's day fixtures is 1930, Darlo 8 - 3 South Shields, League division 3 North. A hat-trick each for Fred Laycock and Jack Hill. Jack Hill scored 9 goals in 7 games that season including another hat-trick in a 5-2 win at home to York in April. Top scorer that season was Maurice Wellock with 36 in 38
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883
