To be honest had the coverage not been great it wouldn't have worried me as It's revenue for the club. However, enjoyed it and I know the guys in charge of it have a lot of pride in what they do so well done.

Bit closer than we would have liked but we got the result in the end and into the hat on Monday and c.£4k in the bank.

Plenty of decent balls in from the right hand side from McMahon. Charman was the stand out performer. 2 really well taken goals and good build up play taking his defender out and rolling him making some space in behind. Saltmer earns his corn as well, two really good saves from those final 2 penalties and nothing he could do about the goals.

Darlington v Prescot Cables

Post by Darlogramps » Sat Oct 03, 2020 4:44 pm

Well it wouldn’t be Darlo if we did things the easy way.....

Some definite rustiness from a few players (to be expected), but overall some encouraging signs for a first competitive match since March.

Really liked the look of Charman. He could turn out to be the poacher we were lacking last season. But he also looked sharp and got involved in the build-up play too. Deserved man of the match. Also thought McMahon had a decent game (the missed penalty aside).

We dominated and should have buried the game long before it got to the shootout. Perhaps with a few more games under their belts, the likes of Campbell and Donawa would have been a bit more clinical.

Defensively, we weren’t troubled too much. The first goal was sloppy though and Hunt was plain stupid to give away that penalty. Early days of course and with game time, I hope they’ll improve.

Another injury for Atkinson. His record has to be a concern.

Also a word for Saltmer. Pleased for him, particularly as some on here (looking at you Old Git) jumped down his throat on the basis of a couple of friendlies. Not going to rush to conclusions on the basis of one shootout, but I’m pleased for him. It should be a big confidence boost.

For some reason, a section of our fans are always really quick to give our keepers a hard time when things don’t go to plan, so hopefully we can get behind him instead.

Well done to all involved with Quaker TV an excellent effort in such a short time to get up and running.
Also well done to the players who for the most part played well in tough conditions. Thought we were the better team and played some lovely football although a little rusty at times. Still need to be more clinical with our finishing but great to see Luke Charman grab his goals well.
Saltner Little to do in the 90 minutes but pulled off two excellent penalty saves
Mc Mahon. Had an excellent game and was a threat going forward as well as assured in defence
Liddle As usual went about his work and played with his customary calmness
Storey. Good to see him back and had a decent game.
Hunt. Bossed the defence and looked fit and in control apart from his needless challenge to give away a soft penalty.
Atkinson Though he was doing Ok until having to come off injured before half time.
Hatfield. Energetic display in midfield as usual and drew the opposition in to fouling him on a number of occasions.
Donowa. Lively first half but seemed to fade a bit second period
Rivers. Saw a lot of the ball looked sharp and set up second goal.
Campbell Plenty of good link up play. Not his day in front of goal but could form a potent partnership with Charman.
Charman Excellent debut with a couple of poachers goals and looked a real handful throughout.
Wheatley. Did well and linked up well with Hatfield as usual. Little surprised he did not start.
Reid. Little chance to make any impact.
Hope Atkinson injury is not serious. Charman also seemed in a little discomfort when he came off so hope he is ok for Tuesday. Plenty of promise for the season ahead and we are in the hat for the next round which is what matters.

Think you are overstating it a bit there Gramps. I did express some doubts about him which I still have but pleased he pulled off two good penalty saves. He and the rest of the defence had a relatively easy game today and much stiffer tests lie ahead. All in all a promising start.

Hard to judge due to the difference in leagues but I was very impressed with Charman. Looking forwards to seeing how he develops. Big fan of the range of passing we have down the right hand side of defence with Hunt and particularly McMahon. Players understandably tired towards the end which led to a very sloppy last 15 mins or so. A slight concern that we missed loads of chances (like last season) and conceded sloppy goals (like last season), but it's very early days so hopefully we will improve on both fronts as the season goes on.

Anyone know if Fylde are streaming the game on Tuesday?

You did say you hoped we were looking at other options, he needed to up his game and that he wasn’t convincing based on about 90 seconds of internet footage.

But I agree he had little to do today and although we really cannot come to a conclusion on today’s match, we can all be pleased for those two penalty saves, which should bring him some confidence.

Well we got through to the next round, I honestly thought we had messed it up when they had scored four pens out of four.

Thought we were ok but a bit slow, rusty which is probably what we expected a bit, the result was everything looking at other clubs going out against teams who are 4/5 games into the season. Also a little bit of cash into the club £3,375 which considering the challenges that are going to come is probably a great help in an impossible budgeting situation.

Charman the stand out, but as mentioned McMahon and in particular his crossing was excellent (let's not talk about his pen), Atkinson a real worry - he suffered with injuries all last season, had issues at Scarborough away and went off early today, doesn't help with Holmes injury a not massive squad and I think that will be our Achilles heel this season.

Early days but think the loss of Holmes and his attacking option is a challenge, however believe AA is looking to bring someone in.

Quaker TV probably should have won man of the match today, unbelievable work from some amazing volunteers.

I accept that I was quick to express a judgment on Saltmer which may have been unfair but I still think it was surprising he was offered a contact after just two pre season games in which 8 goals were conceded.
Goalkeeper is a specialist position and as we only have one first team keeper so it is crucial to get the right man in. He is only 21 and has never made a first team appearance at either Hull or Barrow although I believe he has been on loan at North Ferriby and Cleethorpes.
Given the responsibility that rests on his shoulders he is very inexperienced for the role. Looking at other options seemed a sensible thing to do in this case to see who else may have been available. Maybe this was done I don’t know for sure.
Delighted for him today making two excellent penalty saves and really hope this is the start of a successful season for him and the team.

Reasonable performance today in a match we dominated. Like another poster I thought Hunt got caught a bit when players ran at him, but I suspect that’s all down to rustiness. His composure and coolness on the ball though was something we missed last year. Very early days and all players need games to get that sharpness back, but we might have found someone special in Charman.

Potential 3QR opponents.

A low-ranked opponent at home would be ideal, particularly as there’s no such thing as an away day for a while yet.

genuine question here if we get drawn away to a club below is in the pyramid are we allowed to take a small number of visiting supporters as I believe they can still admit one third of their attendance.

They would have had to buy tickets under the guise of being Chasetown or neutral spectators.

The principle is that in that situation elite clubs are not allowed spectators. What that means in practise is that away clubs are not provided an allocation and all tickets sales are done via the home club.

It also depends where you play. There are many clubs no longer allowed spectators by their councils. These clubs are really struggling now.

They have been informed that a football ground is not an open public space (focus on word public) so anyone who meets up with another household in the ground is breaking the law. See Runcorn Town statement.

Equally as they operate licensed premises they can only serve food and drink as table service so can't operate a takeaway service (see Hyde statement which affects all of Ashton-Under-Lyme). In ground where entry is £5/£6 and a pie, peas and pint costs a fiver they are losing 60-70% of their revenue streams now.

Thought we played some brilliant stuff yesterday and Prescot Cables had no right to be in the game (think the final shot count for us was 28 on goal). The first goal conceded was poor from Hatfield & Donawa who both rushed out leaving Storey & Hunt isolated, and whilst at the time I was convinced Hunt’s challenge was sheer lunacy, having watched it back it’s clear he is anticipating a cross which he is attempting to block and their lad very cleverly plants his foot to the right for the contact. An absolute stonewall penalty, however I can see why it happened from someone with so much experience.

Charman was fantastic too, O’Neill esque. Rivers also outstanding. Special mention to Saltmer too who pulled off those 2 penalty saves to win us the tie.

From a financial point of view, yesterday was important. £3,375 for winning the tie, and a guaranteed £1,875 from the next round just for taking part. Also gives us another tie to receive 40% of the proceeds from.

Finally, QuakerTV, simply outstanding. Excellent quality, commentary and highlights during half-time and at full-time. The different camera angles were excellent and definitely gives a different point of view of the match. I’m absolutely astounded that it is volunteers running this type of coverage at such a high standard.

I think on balance for me there were more positives than negatives but only just. I have to say I am really disappointed to hear in Darren's interview we did not prepare for the possibility of penalties. That for me is piss poor preparation.

Don't understand Atkinson starts with Wheatley on the bench, also read Wrightson has not signed a contract at Blyth, maybe he could take Holmes's place.
