Next season’s captain
With Galbraith leaving, we’ll need a new permanent captain.
Is there anyone who thinks it should be someone other than Will Hatfield?

Re: Captain next season
Only other name I'd put in the hat is Liddle, he captained the side a few times last season.

Quite possibly Spen.
He’s an independent free thinker.
He likes to think outside the box.
Doesn’t know what he’s on about.

Re: Next season’s captain
Are some examples of players form dipping when they have the additional responsibility of captaincy? Having said that I cannot think of anyone in our squad so far other than him. AA seems to really rate Atkinson wonder if he is a potential candidate?Darlogramps wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 2:42 pmWith Galbraith leaving, we’ll need a new permanent captain.

Re: Next season’s captain
It's hard to see beyond Hatfield, unless AA brings in a centre half that normally is a captain at his previous clubs.
Re: Next season’s captain
Will Hatfield is the obvious choice for me because he leads by example and I am sure the other players will respect him. Another point in his favour could be that he is not part of the ex Blyth contingent so he can maybe maintain a little bit of distance from the rest of the players. A good captain perhaps should not be too friendly with the players as he may have to act as a link between them and the management at times.

Re: Next season’s captain
Hatfield and Liddle would appear from the outside in to have the traditional temperament. Who really knows if not in the dressing room - maybe Jarrett Rivers is the one who can get players going and knows what to say and when.
Beyond being good at predicting a coin toss, which certain could be advantageous, I've often wondered how much wearing an armband really makes a difference? In Italy don't they just give it to the player with the most appearances because they acknowledge it doesn't mean anything.
Whatever characteristics make someone a good captain can be done whether wearing an armband or not - arguably you used the armband as a confidence 'boost' on someone who is naturally more introverted.

I'm surprised Joe Wheatley's name hasn't been thrown into the mix - Walsall away anybody timely intervention.

Re: Next season’s captain
I think it makes a difference. If I was a player playing for Darlo I'd sooner have a captain like Craig Liddle than a captain like James Caton.
I would be the type of player who would need shouting at on occasions, but I would only take this from someone who led by example, like Craig Liddle.

Seemingly it’s you. And there’s a lovely irony there.wizardofos wrote:A thread started by Darlogramps.

Would you be less inclined to take it from Liddle simply because he wasn't the designated captain though?theoriginalfatcat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 6:58 pmI think it makes a difference. If I was a player playing for Darlo I'd sooner have a captain like Craig Liddle than a captain like James Caton.

Re: Next season’s captain
Probably not, but on saying this who would be captain if Liddle was in the team? And before anyone says Gabbiadini - I never thought he should have been captain. Not because he wasn't a good one, but just because he played in the wrong position.

Joe Tait you have to be kidding. Jamie Chandler a better shout if you want a controversial name in the frame.

If you want controversy I nominate Andy Park.

Re: Next season’s captain
Tait's a bit one dimensional as a player, however at present he plays for an elite team!

Re: Next season’s captain
Personally would not want to see Joe Tait back at the club. Nothing against the lad but don't think he will add much, or be an improvement on what we already have at the club.
Re: Next season’s captain
Caton would only be captain if the new shirt was long sleeved with integral gloves.
Re: Next season’s captain
We conceded 50 goals this season compared to York who conceded just 28 with Joe Tait in the heart of defence. He is also very vocal, which I thought was something we lacked from our CB's last season. Laing and Storey are good players however I feel they'd benefit from a leader alongside.
Re: Next season’s captain
York also had Steve McNulty at cente half who was vastly experienced at a higher level so may have had a hand in the low goals against?

Now there's a leader. Steve McNulty, a Tranmere great. What an addition he would be!

I hope not.. He's 38 years old.. I'm sure we could find someone younger and better.don'tbuythesun wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:22 amNow there's a leader. Steve McNulty, a Tranmere great. What an addition he would be!
Re: Next season’s captain
I've read York fans using slightly less flattering descriptions about his overall game these days.
