Gateshead game...

Post by LoidLucan » Mon Aug 05, 2019 4:22 pm

Surprisingly segregated... and they've just signed Nicky Deverdics. He's been with Wrexham and needs international clearance.

Good interview with Michael Liddle on the official site in which he says the lads are desperate to put it right on Wednesday. He sounded so frustrated and anguished about Saturday's goals giveaway and determined it won't happen again.

Good to hear a passionate interview. Lets hope we keep it tight at the back on Wednesday.

Liddle's interview was excellent, shows real passion, which we lacked last year. Also note that he said they were training on Monday night, where I think previously if there was mid week game they did not train before hand. Looks like we have a really professional group now both management and players.
I am one of those supporters who would have been ok if Tommy had stayed another year but I accept that I would have been wrong, whatever the result on Wednesday I now think on and off the pitch we have the right team to move us forward.

I’ll wait to see where we are after 5-6 games before having an opinion - tommy has to sell 3-4 key players which didn’t help so at least Armstrong won’t have to do that.

TW didn’t have to sell until match 14 of the season, by which point we were out of the FA Cup and our form was 4-4-5 from our opening 13 games.

Incidentally that works out at a PPG of 51; we finished on 50.

TW had to sell, but we were hardly doing well before he had to.

Last season Blyth were below us at the beginning and then took off, so 5-6 games may not be the tell tale sign for the whole season. For me just seeing how we warm up before and after the game is telling of the professionalism now, and each interview with the players speaks volumes for the passion. I personally am not expecting a push for promotion this year, as this is a year for building for what is a newish team put together, (need to remember we could not afford some of the players AA wanted to bring in). As long as we see some decent football, a reasonable position in the league and a couple of cup wins I will be over the moon. We will struggle against the full time teams and big budget boys like "The pride of County Durham", York, Hereford etc but as long as we give them a close game (and hopefully take the points), I will be a happy boy.
On Sat there was a number of fans who were really upset during the game, one I remember in the bar at half time who banged the table in frustration, may be down to drink but this could also be out of high expectations which we need to be aware of our current position, part time, limited finance, new team pulled together etc.
Personally I am just going to enjoy the season as for the first time I can actually see "US" getting promotion in the next couple of seasons as a fan owned club.

Talkings over Saturday's gone .now it's time for this group of players to show what they are capable of ,looking forward to tomorrow night and a good showing from the lads ,they know that they let themselves and the club down on Saturday and I,m sure will want to put that right.
Com,on Darlo.

Deverdics is a good signing for them, i reckon. They've a bit of a weird squad right now, but i dare say there's more about them than Blyth. Their crowd at the weekend wasn't as bad as i thought it might have been, but lets see how it lasts over a season if results don't go their way. Right now, i'd reckon they'll be around mid-table.

I'd be very disappointed if it's less than 1,500. First home game of the season against local opposition?

Tommy signed a bunch of overpaid, pea hearted midgets and had no cohesion or tactics. We also had a tiny squad due to the large individual wages, so had kids on the bench throughout September.

He had to sell Syers and Styche (which doesn't add up to 3 or 4) through his own fault in assembling an overpaid ill equipped squad that tanked - thus causing lack of interest, lower crowds and less income.

Um, add a few floaters and it only adds up to 1200? Plus Gateshead will bring at least...well, about 100. That'll still be 90 more than most other away teams though.

There's extra interest due to the new manager and all of the new signings, it's the first home match of the season, I'm going for 1,680.

Good shout Ghost. Blyth last season was 1680 in a very similar midweek game against local opposition at the beginning of the season. I can see at least that. I reckon 1750

I fancy I’d be a fair bit closer to the attendance than you will with 1200. We might as well pack in if we only manage that.

Decent end to the game. Probably a fair result. Gateshead were very solid although didn’t offer much going forwards. Good crowd too

Good to get the first point on the board - hopefully we can build on that on Saturday

Listened to the majority of the match. Pretty frustrating but good to get our first point and at least we are off the mark! Seemed defence still needs some work and maybe Laing could be the one to be taken out of the firing line maybe for Heaton. In attack it seemed that we worked the ball well just that against organised teams our ability to penetrate is nullified and there isn't much of an alternative approach. However, Donawa seemed to be a bright spark when he came on so possibly pushing for a start against Kettering and especially as it sounded like there were a few knocks, so squad rotation is crucial. Also sounded like once again the referee was less than equal and makes a stronger case for my conspiracy that we are on list of slightly more unfavorable clubs... probably not true but you know! The final positive was the attendance of 1,900 which is very encouraging and hopefully if some of those return on Saturday and maybe see us win, then it may just galvanise a bit of momentum. Overall a satisfactory point.

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Thought we finished the stronger side, they had one shot and scored, unlucky with Thommo rattling the crossbar and would like to see the penalty shout from us that was turned down. The ref was a shambles and got conned by them going down very easily, stopped the flow of the game and gave us nothing.Another 5 minutes and we would have won that, let's get the 3 points on Saturday and we are up and running.Hopefully Atkinson may be fit to start

How was that not a penalty.... tripped from behind and the lino signalled it but was told by the ref to put his flag down. The injuries are piling up now with both Holmes (knee) and Trotman (ankle) on crutches and looking bad. Fair result against a fit, well organised side.

Not sure what to make of that, we just couldn’t get any sort of momentum going. Passes going astray to slow to move the ball, didn’t have the best view of their goal looked like the keeper just watched it go in, unless it took a deflection.
Laing needs to up his game or Heaton needs to start.
Could be just nerves first home game excellent crowd, hope they come back Saturday.
Still our first point of the season.
