Their goal took a big deflection.

First half was same old story, unable to play against a well organised physical team who defend deep and close us down. We were shocking to be honest, resorting to long balls to our short forward line! No plan B.
Second half was a lot better, getting the ball forward much quicker and using the width of pitch and running at pace. Honestly thought taking Holness off changed the game with Rivers a lot more forward thinking in midfield. Still worry we will not score enough goals but let’s wait and see.
Thought the passion, effort, commitment and fitness levels were massively better than last year. Thought we looked like the full time team in the last 20 minutes.

Lack of height in the team up top is slightly worrying , we having to try and walk it at times as we hesitating to cross the ball knowing we ain't going to win any headers

Oh yea it’s the first time I’ve seen the away fans arrive in in a big double decker bus
You may have seen them arrive in the double decker bus, the bad news for them is they won't be leaving on the bus. It's knackered.

They were all brought into the bar afterwards until two replacements arrive. The rugby club will be rubbing their hands together tonight

That's bad news with a reasonably small squad.

Atkinson (when fit) can play right back. Which is a bit of a shame if he has to, because I was looking forward to seeing if he could be that midfielder who we've been crying out for since Turnbull left. I wonder if we can get another loan in from Boro? I think one of AA's sons is there as a right back I believe.

Thought 1-1 was about right tonight. Gateshead were in control in the first half, and just didn't give us any time whatsoever. We were better in the second half of the second half with Donawa looking really good - think we've come up trumps there. Thompson impressed throughout.

I think Gateshead will certainly be top half this season as they are full time, with Williamson solid as a rock at the back. They looked organised, competent, and closed us down quickly. This for me was a decent test. Farsley was a freak result and we'll have easier home matches than Gateshead.

A bigger crowd than I expected of 1,989, which is very good for a Wednesday night, and to be fair it was swelled by a better than expected following from Gateshead - I reckon at least 250, maybe as many as 300.

I don't think our squad is that small really. We're looking at missing Trotman, Atkinson, Wheatley, Holmes through injury on Saturday, and Burn is out in the cold. That's 5 senior players and we're only 2 matches in

But when this happened last season we were literally stuck with 5 16 year olds on the bench.

Here's a thought - Burn actually started out as a right back so he may be more comfortable there than in central defence.

Could he be worth a shot? One last chance to prove his worth?

We have 21 counting Burn and the GK Hall, which numbers wise is probably not bad. I think it's more squad quality depth currently, one or two out of the 19 left are not trusted enough to make an impact.

We were very poor in the first half, we couldn't win any 50/50 balls and out option was our defence playing aimless punts up field to our small strikers who won nothing in the air. Second half was much better and we deserved to equalise as we dominated possession. Donawa made an immediate impact and it was great to see Heaton get on at the end, although playing right back wasn't his ideal position. Great crowd tonight and much more than I expected, hopefully the floaters will be impressed with the fightback.

Laing is fulfilling everything that the Hartlepool fans said about him. Heaton coming in to the centre of defence would make a massive difference.

I'd like to give a big thumbs up to Tyrone O'Neill who made a big difference when he came on. Suddenly the many aimless balls forward from the first half were beginning to stick up front, and the lad has very good feet as well. Thought Campbell was given more chance once he had a partner to work off. Donawa was very useful when he came on and Heaton looked solid. Their goal was a deflection, but that still didn't excuse some poor defending that led up to it. And it wasn't a penalty. Their player took the ball and Campbell stumbled over his leg. That isn't to say that the ref wasn't pretty woeful on a lot of other decisions where we got far less than they did. We weren't very good in the first half after the goal went in, although we had looked promising before that. And what a great goal attempt by Thommo, with O'Neill just failing to sort his feet to take advantage of the rebound. Worrying about the number and seriousness of some of the injuries we are racking up.

Double what I expected.

So 1,688 home fans on a Wednesday night, pretty good that

For comparison the first home match last season was v Curzon and was 1,488 (with about 10 from Curzon), on a Saturday as well. So a couple hundred home fans up.

This was never an issue with Gabbiadini and Duffield up front.

Donawa will probably always look dangerous as a second half sub against tired defences.

It will be interesting to see if he can make the same impact from the start against fresher legs and where he needs to manage his own energy a little better.

I thought Laing had a good game. The odd bad pass but there will be when he’s attempting the balls he attempts. Gateshead didn’t create much so we must have been ok defensively on the whole

And the “aimless long balls” in the first half were us clearly trying to play over the top of Gateshead. It didn’t really work as Gateshead were very solid at the back, but they weren’t on the whole aimless. O’Neill looks a good option to provide some physicality up front

I’m sure Watson will fill in fine at RB if needed. Sure he played there for Blyth at times

"Error prone" is Laing's middle name. He has a history of giving the ball away, game after game. And we were warned. Hartlepool fans say he was the worst defender they'd ever seen. He was given 2 out of 10 in the Echo, twice! What worries me is that Armstrong rates him.

Not sure if many others noticed, but AA’s reaction after we scored was to jump up and punch the air. Not saying it means much but it’s nice to have a manager that’s clearly passionate about the club again, it’s the little things.

Watched Laing all pre-season, and both his two games this season.

Loughlin publicly threw him under the bus; but I’m not surprised you’re judging him on what others have said and an “Echo rating”.

Watch him properly and you’ll find out. Alun rates him for a reason.

Laing has had two loan spells at Notts County (he can't have been that bad if they brought him back for a second spell, no?)

Fuck what Poolies say about him, when has any chimp choker known what they are talking about?

Laing won player of the month for Blyth in March last season and was getting in the team ahead of Buddle.

There was a bit of dodgy distribution from him tonight at times, sometimes he just needs to clear his lines and put his foot through it - but he never hid, always made himself available, and his head didn't drop when he screwed a few of those passes up.

Needs a lot more than 2 competitive matches before facing the kangaroo court.
