New Striker

I think on the paper the additions look great this season.
However, I think the only area where we are short (literally) is up front.
I presume Alun will see how Campbell starts and if things are not going well, will venture into the loan market for a striker.

If all those who have agreed terms do sign, (See Club website) I doubt we have anything left in the Budget. Even Loan players may cost us something don't they?

If you listen to Alun's latest interview, a lack of goals won't be an issue this season

Striker wise we've got Campbell and O'Neill, and I reckon Thompson, Rivers, Holmes and even Hatfield if he is allowed to push on will all contribute goals. Plus we've got the likes of Laing, Galbraith, Heaton etc that are all big lads that can contrbute from set peices.

The manager will play with one striker as he did at his previous club, if we get an injury to Campbell for example then O'Neill will step in and then the option to bring a loan in is there if needed, but this would be dependant on whether or not the right player is available and whether we can afford to contribute wages wise or whether we can get someone who we don't have to pay for.

And as Armstrong said in his interview today and as mentioned above, we are right on budget now so unless we sell a player, crowds increase or we have a cup run then I imagine we'll stick with what we have for the medium term future.

I don't see how we have space for another striker at the moment. We will be playing with one up front, and have two central strikers on the books at the moment, so one to start, one on the bench.

We have 3 players in behind the striker and probably 5 players to fill those 3 positions, so again probably adequate back-up options.

If Campbell were to get injured we either put a youngster on the bench behind O'Neil, or we look at the loan market again - no point having 3 strikers on the books and one of them not even making the match day squad each week.

We will be playing at the arena again next season - fact.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Any chance of converting Heaton into a CF, along the lines of Crouch or Beck? Our forwards looked like midgets compared to the defences of Farsley & Gateshead. May help give us some alternatives up front!

It would be nice to get a big strong CF in, a foil for Campbell.

Just like Man City and Liverpool with their giant Centre forwards.

Football has evolved, it’s no longer about long balls and aerial crosses into the box. With a big man it’s a temptation to just hit it up to him against and equally big Centre half who relishes that type of play.

Slow build up then play it very fast along the deck in the final third. Work it into the box.

We have the team to play this way, just missing David Atkinson to allow us to start off the play from the back.

Having no physical outlet at this level you’re on a hiding to nothing. Just because you’ve got a physical presence does not necessarily mean long ball football.

There’s three big problems regarding getting a quality big centre forward that is both good on the deck and in the air:

1. There aren’t that many top notch ones about.
2. Bearing this in mind, they cost top dollar, and in a queue for players financially we are stood behind Spennymoor, South Shields, York, Harrogate, Gateshead, Morpeth and even Whickham in the Northern League.
3. Our manager has not in the past or based on recent comments in interviews has no intention of playing with a target man/physical presence etc

Hiding to nothings, lacking physical presences, needing an outlet etc etc etc, these forwards that are of the required standard to improve us are in short supply and hoovered up by sugar daddy owned clubs with deep pockets.

To be fair AA has said he would have liked a big physical striker, however O’Neill may cover this off for us for a period as he is quite aggressive for a young academy player.

O'Neill has made an impact and is an asset to the team. Yes, he is still learning his trade & not the finished product, but biggest problem is that he is only here on loan. OK, this gives AA a bit more time to find a CF but in the long run, more disruption & uncertainty when his loan runs out as per Andrew Nelson last season.

I understand we have O'Neill until the end of December, which is a bit different to the handful of matches that we had Nelson for.

You are right about Nelson, but he was also a bit more mature and had some pedigree so we were a shop window for the lad. If O'Neill wins us the same amount of points as Nelson then we will do well out of him. December does give us a little more time to search for a more permanent solution.

Can’t see that happening unless we’ve won a few cup games beforehand
