Darlo v Halifax Match Thread

Post by JE93 » Sat Dec 24, 2016 2:51 pm

With the build up to being back home not much talk of what we might do on the pitch.

Seems like we have two realistic options 4-4-2:

Jameson
Marrs Brown Burgess Galbraith
Gillies Scott Turnbull Thompson
Beck Cartman

Scott performances give MG a decision to make and his strength on and off the ball might be just what we need against what is likely to be a physical Billy Heath Halifax side.

Or we could go 4-2-3-1:

Jameson
Marrs Brown Burgess Galbraith
Turnbull Scott
Gillies Sayers Thompson
Beck

Even though this formation gives us more in midfield I don't think it offers us anything more defensively.

We won't go 4-4-2 until our defence is sorted and doesn't need the extra protection that a more defensive formation allows.

There's an argument that 4-4-2 offers more protection as the full backs have some cover from the wingers which they won't get in a 4-3-3 so much.

Swings and roundabouts, and I'd say more dependent on the work-rate/discipline of the individual players than the formation they're deployed in.

If Gray wants to start with Syers its 4-5-1 otherwise 4-4-2

When you concede mainly from set pieces formation is largely irrelevant on keeping those goals out

Less defensive cover can result in conceding those set pieces in the first place though.

Don't concede set pieces and you don't concede goals from set pieces.

It's an interesting one. With Sayers in a 4-2-3-1 I don't think we have any extra cover than we would with Cartman in a 4-4-2 as I think Cartman defends very well from the front.

Whereas if we move to a flat 4-5-1 with Scott, Turnbull and Falkringham in CM then we don't have much attacking threat and getting forward to support Beck.

I would tend to move towards a 4-4-2 as we have been far better at attacking than defending this season.

Seems a long long time since we've been discussing team selection. We must be in a sticky patch. Lol.

I think we'll go 442. Always seem to start that way at home. I'd have Turnbull and Scott in The middle. Scott isn't pretty. We'll he is. But you know I mean. He isn't pretty. But he is effective and he does the dirty work and gives the defence the protection it needs. I like Falkingham but he lacks the physical edge which sees him give away too many free kicks. And that puts us under pressure.

Up front. I would always start with Hardy and Beck. I'm Cartmans biggest fan. And that is why I am an advocate of bringing him on after 60 mins. Whoever starts always score beck runs the opposition ragged. The second player then comes on. When it's Nathan, he's a more intelligent player and can find the magical position to nick the winner.

Cartman seems to be out of favour at the moment, as he was an unused sub at Kidderminster. I reckon we'll go with Beck and Syers up front tomorrow.

Would really like Cartman and Hardy up front for a change with Thommo and Gillies on the wings and try and change our style of play to more passing and movement rather than long high balls into the box but with them having quite a few tall lads I think MG will stick with Beck.

Should be a cracking atmosphere tomorrow with 3300 in the ground, really hope we put on a decent show with a large media presence and don't freeze like we have done in the past but this set of players have not failed us yet, cannot wait.

It certainly looks as if we have taken one thing from Heritage Park to Blackwell Meadows for tomorrow's game. The bloody wind machine.

There's only one position in debate for me. Does he start syers and go 4-5-1 or start cartman and go 4-4-2. (Scott deserves to start). I'd go with Cartman today as he's up against his hometown team

I am genuinely confident we will win 3-1 today. But if we don't can we please put a gagging order in place to prevent the following appearing on here later? "We created enough chances and should have won today, but got undone at a couple of set pieces. No disgrace losing to a team below us in the league who play in Blue. MG will sort things out he usually does."
Roll on 3 o'clock let the party begin!
