Peterborough v Darlo Playoff final

Post by BUSHEAD » Fri Nov 25, 2016 9:32 pm

For some reason I just watched parts of that game on youtube.

Couple of daft things really. Firstly without cheating can anyone name the referee from that game ?

2nd of all , why cant I remember a player for us called Paul Holsgrove who came of the bench for Brian Atkinson ?

Thirdly , why was Steve Tutill pronounced Toot-til by the commentators .

Finally, how on earth didn't we win that game? To this day I can barely believe we got beat.

We didn't win because they had more Lads with ASA swimming awards than we did.

Mike Dean I think from memory.

Holsgrove I think was brought in at the end of the season (from Scotland?) and only made a handful of appearances in centre mid.

No idea on the third one.

Posh were completely outplayed by us, it was a travesty that we lost.

Didn't we play into the deep end in the second half? Shocking weather all day, never seen my lads and their mates so upset at footie.

I cried, but luckily it was disguised by the rain so I didn't lose any manliness.

The ref was Mike Dean, first time at Wembley I believe. The game should never have gone ahead! The pitch was waterlogged as it had rained all day and during the match, if I recall. The only reason it wasn't postponed was, I believe that there was a friendly the following day between England and Brazil (1-1) and this would have complicated a re-arranged game.

For all the rain, it was still a memorable occasion. There's a tackle by craig Liddle that will live in my memory for ever. As for the game, we were better first half but Posh came into 2nd half.

We lost a game we should have won (That Matty Appleby chance........) it rained all day (that game should have been postponed) i was soaked walking round London, Wembley was a massive s*** hole, I got home at about 3 am ( must subdued train journey ever - alcohol free) and to make matters worse I was pissed on by a police horse on the way out of Wembley.

What a day

Matty Appleby was pretty anonymous in the 2000 game.

We were well on top until they scored but after that we were clinging on after Hodgy sent everyone forward as he liked to do.
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

I seem to remember P'bro having a good chance just before they scored - was it Liddle that stopped them scoring?

My memory was that we outplayed them completely but the ball wouldnt go in the net. And that they had a purple patch of about 10 minutes where they could have had three
