1883 Prefix
1883 Prefix
I've just read the official release regarding fans on twitter contacting the league requesting the removal of this prefix. Why would anyone waste their time doing this? It remains our official title, and as such, we should remain Darlington 1883.
Seems to have wasted not only peoples time from the league, but also our own club.

Re: 1883 Prefix
This should get some good responses.
And it's not a prefix either, it's a suffix

Re: 1883 Prefix
That's your opinion, plenty of others would see it worthwhile. I wouldn't contact the league personally but I do understand some peoples frustration, especially with those clubs who are asked to drop the 1883 by the fans but refuse to do so.love it! wrote:I've just read the official release regarding fans on twitter contacting the league requesting the removal of this prefix. Re: 1883 Prefix
To be fair, the BBC did remove the '1883' from their league tables. So this was always worth a try.
Do you think that we should remain 'Darlington 1883' when the opportunity for an application to change our name to 'Darlington FC' comes up next summer?
The majority of fans don't like the '1883' suffix as it's a reminder of how the FA viewed us as a new club, even though we aren't. All because we failed to obtain a certificate from a former-Chairman. It was a real kick in the teeth after being demoted a further 3 leagues.
Hopefully next summer we will revert to our rightful playing name, just as Farsley, Hyde etc have done.

Re: 1883 Prefix
Pretty sure the rescue group paid good money for the legal rights to use Darlington FC as our title. As such, that should be our title.
Anyone who wants Darlington 1883 to be our official title (I.E. the one we must use in FA competitions) is either a troll or grotesquely ignorant to the symbolism of those four numbers.

With the attention on this, it's somewhat frustrating to see a new fan flag with 1883 on it this evening.

Coincidentally Chorley have an 1883 flag too. Either they were formed in the same year, or their fans are evil c****.

They were originally formed in 1875 as a rugby club but switched to playing with a round ball in 1883.dickdarlington wrote:Coincidentally Chorley have an 1883 flag too. Either they were formed in the same year, or their fans are evil c****.

Re: 1883 Prefix
Why? I thought we were a fan owned club where everyone is entitled to a express a view. You could take a view that every time Darlington 1883 gets promoted it is in fact the best way to stick 2 fingers up to the FA. Or is that unbelievable too?Comfortably_numb wrote:Unbelievable. Re: 1883 Prefix
I'd much rather be promoted as Darlington FC, given that's our legal business name that the rescue group paid money for.bga wrote:Why? And of course people are entitled to express an opinion. But in doing so, they have to accept the overwhelming number of Darlington fans will criticise that view. You can't state an opinion and then cry off when it gets questioned. If you don't want critcism, then you better keep your opinion to yourself.
They're not just 4 numbers. It's a symbol of Raj Singh's greed and spite. And it's a symbol of the FA's brutal action in demoting us.
Remember it was the FA who told us we couldn't agree to Raj Singh's terms. And then it was the FA who told us because we hadn't agreed terms with Singh, we had to be demoted to the Northern League.

To me and plenty of other Darlington fans, recognition of our history and heritage is worth fighting for.HarryCharltonsCat wrote:It's only as important as you want to make it. To me, that's not much.

Re: 1883 Prefix
I still recognise our history and heritage, 1883 or not, as will all Darlington fans. To those with no allegiance to the club, it means sod all, except when they fancy going fishing. To everyone I've talked to in the "real" world, we are still Darlo, same as AFC Wimbledon are still Wimbledon, AFC Bournemouth are still Bournemouth, and AFC Halifax are still Halifax. And I know they are different to us, but the point still stands. When we play Halifax, I won't be thinking, oh we're playing the phoenix club that used to be Halifax Town today, I'll be thinking "oh, we're playing Halifax today. Remember that FA Cup Tie with Man City all those years ago". I'll be happy if we get to drop the 1883, but it won't eat me up if we don't. Bar occasionally on here and Non League Zone, I never hear the 1883 used anyway.

Re: 1883 Prefix
It is a tad unfortunate and ironic that the numbers we now have come to hate, represent the year the club we know we still are, was formed.
p.s. the 83 in my name is my birth year, not related to 1883... and no I wasn't born in 1883

Re: 1883 Prefix
AFC Bournemouth took that name voluntarily, their old name was something long winded... don't think they were ever a "phoenix club"HarryCharltonsCat wrote:I still recognise our history and heritage, 1883 or not, as will all Darlington fans. Bournemouth never went bust and as far as I'm concerned they have always been known as AFC Bournemouth.

Re: 1883 Prefix
I remember them being called AFC Bournemouth in the 80s?
Anyway, my point is that they never went bust like Halifax and never adopted the prefix AFC because of the trouble they had a few seasons ago.

So Bournemouth chose to sound like a Phoenix club? Very confusing.

There was no such thing as a phoenix club back in the early 1970s when Bournemouth picked the AFC Bournemouth name!
They chose it to sound continental

I think it's the usual one, I saw it last night - bottom left hand corner if viewed from the grassy bank side. Personally I don't like it but 'each to their own'
