BBC remove the 1883 on tables

Post by Quakerz » Sat Aug 20, 2016 5:10 pm

Should think so as well!

Considering there is no "County" after Stockport, and no "AFC" before Halifax.

One step closer to being recognised as Darlington, hopefully we'll be able to push it through the FA after this season.

Think it was the best we could do at the time as we couldn't use our real name?

I think it resulted from a poll carried out on this message board.

We didn't really have a sufficiently unified structure back then to be able to do a proper vote, so the interim board were doing what they could at the time to keep the name as it was but the FA pulled the rug from under their feet by treating us as if we were a new club and demanded they choose a new playing name. They just went with what was voted on here, even though that was always everyone's second choice to keeping our old name.

It was something along those lines.

You know we did. We had to vote on a name change.

Doesn't make it right, doesn't make it wanted.

Damn right. And the people who actually like the '1883' have no idea of the kick in the balls from the FA it signifies.

The sooner it goes the better.

I've had my user name since our football league days however back then the numbers 1883 were hardly ever referred to, at that point I'm sure a lot of our own fans wouldn't even know the year that the club was formed let alone anyone else, well you can't say that's true now!
I can't wait for the day when we can officially drop the numbers from our name as to me we have never been anything other than DFC but I'm still proud that there has been the same football club in Darlo for so long. 1883 is part of our history but not part of our name.

We were told we couldn't have AFC Darlington as well. It was run through the echo.

Am I remembering right but wasn't Locomotive Darlington an option and The Bunker was trying to get that voted for?

Not sure we could ever get away from that one!

I wonder if those who were so quick to complain to the BBC will mention anything to the sainted Northern Echo.

P.27 of the sports section has the National League North table with 1883 included in our name.
