Subtle hint there as to what the likes of Chandler, Ramshaw and Curtis were looking to be paid.
Also know that Craddock was on a canny wedge and Spenny would at least have to have matched that. That was the reason why we didn't sign him, from what I understand it didn't get past the initial conversation.

Good to see that Gray, won't put the financial stability of the club at risk, in order to bring in a player. As Gray says, we can start the season with what we've already got. But any injuries or suspensions to our existing strikeforce and we'll have to bring in somebody, perhaps on loan from a bigger club.

Sounds like Gray will only sign players that want to play for us, rather than getting players who want a big pay day, above anything else.

"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883
