Are we unique in English football?
Are we unique in English football?
I was just thinking the other day that we have now plyead in Divisions 2,3,4 of the football league and tiers 1,3,4 and 5 of the non-league pyramid. If we go up we'll have played in 8 tiers of English football and we've now played in 7. Not counting phoenix clubs, is this the most tiers played in by one club?

Could be. I've heard of yo-yo clubs but we're more of a deep sea diver of a club!

Re: Are we unique in English football?
I wonder if the old Wimbledon competed in 8 divisions. I think they started off in the Isthmian league (level 7 or 8) and ended up in Division 1 of course.

The Pyramid would not have been in existence when they came into the league back in 1978 or so.Yarblockos wrote:I wonder if the old Wimbledon competed in 8 divisions. I think they started off in the Isthmian league (level 7 or 8) and ended up in Division 1 of course.
The conference was formed in I think 1979 and the rest of the pyramid only came about over a long period of time.
AFC Wimbledon however have played in I think 6 or six steps of non league and 1 in the league. They played in:
Combined Counties
Combined Counties Premier Division
Isthmian 1
Isthmian Premier
Conference South
Conference National
Football League 2
The info above is from http://fchd.info/ A great history site for football clubs

Re: Are we unique in English football?
The Northern League was Level 5 once, but travel costs from the NE Far corner allowed decades of over-taking.

Is that the clue for 3 down?Neil Johnson wrote:The Northern League was Level 5 once, but travel costs from the NE Far corner allowed decades of over-taking.

I took it to be from the Durham Constabulary advising against the hogging of the outside lane of the A1(M).

I'm convinced this guy only ever comes on here after a good blow on the old Jamaican herbage.Neil Johnson wrote:The Northern League was Level 5 once, but travel costs from the NE Far corner allowed decades of over-taking.

Maybe this is a line from a new musical written by Sting about his upbringing in the NE?Emdubya wrote:I'm convinced this guy only ever comes on here after a good blow on the old Jamaican herbage.Neil Johnson wrote:The Northern League was Level 5 once, but travel costs from the NE Far corner allowed decades of over-taking.

With Neil it's more likely to be a few pints of the old Öl.

Re: Are we unique in English football?
Accrington Stanley have played in the following leagues since reforming in 1968.
Lancashire Combination Division 2
Lancashire Combination Division 1
Cheshire League Division 2
North West Counties
Northern Premier Division 1
Northern Premier, Premier
Nationwide Conference
Football League Division Two
If you include the club pre folding then also:Pre 1966
Division Three North
Division Three
Division Four.
interestingly Stanley still claim to have been formed in 1891.
