Trying to determine the significance of the *. Could it be signifying the clubs which entered the competition? In which case we were the only one in our league.

"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

It says quite clearly at the bottom there were 734 entries, so it's not that.
Not clear what it stands for though. It seems to be the sides who've reached the final list, but it's a bit inconsistent.

As there are 50 english non-league clubs with asterixes (or should that be asterii), maybe it indicates a top 50 finish.Makka Pakka wrote:http://thecatalogue.tripod.com/id53.html

Great job done by all that produce the programme for each home game. I used to buy a programme every home game, then got out of the habit. I'll make sure that I do buy one next season.

The quality of the programmes are fantastic. As professional as any league 2 club
