Bobby Moore

Post by Feethams 1966 » Wed Jan 14, 2015 7:24 pm

Some years ago I remember reading an article about an interview with the late great England captain Bobby Moore in which he said he had played all over the world in his career, from Italy to Peru, but the hardest match he had ever played in was up at Darlington, and he added that he bet they still talk about it up there.
When would that have been and what was the score? Would it have been a cup match in the ealy sixties as I suspect?

I think it was in the League Cup in 1960.

Darlington won 3-2. Attendance was just under 17,000.

League cup run 1960 v West Ham maybe. Can't think of any other game he played up here.

Remember it well. Spence buged the net after 20 seconds and Lance Robson ran them ragged

He must have known he'd been in a match to have remembered it so well. I guess in 1960 he maybe wasn't as well known. I wonder what happened in the next round.

Bolton then lost to Rotherham, and Rotherham went all the way to the final, only to lose 3-2 over 2 legs after winning the first leg 2-0!

Villa won the second leg 3-0 after extra time!

West Ham's & England's Bobby Robson was so distraught at full time that he battered a kid's autograph book into the Feethams mire. 2 Darlo players followed him into the tunnel and applied rough justice.

One of the Darlo players told me that Robson moaned to him about the "Darlo" assault that game at a sportsman's dinner decades later and threatened he would "have em" if he could find them. Our player kept mum.

I witnessed Robson go absolutely bananas when a lightweight "Darlo" reserves team managed a 1-1 draw against his team of overpaid NUFC international reserves played at West Allotment about ten years ago.
