Most famous Darlo XI players

Post by Comfortably_numb » Thu Nov 20, 2014 12:54 pm

So, while lying awake at 4am this morning enjoying a bout of insomnia, for some reason I started thinking about the thread about potential loan players and players who've played for us in the past. Jimmy Case then sprang to mind (no idea why) - but in an effort to get to sleep I started putting a famous XI darlo team together in my head - can anyone beat this (remember it's a team of most well known / famous players, not necessarily the best)

Kasper Schmeichal
Frank Gray, Gary Bennet, Gary Pallister
Julian Joachim, Jimmy Case, Bernie Slaven (boo), Nick Pickering (stretching it here!)
Marco Gabbiadini, David Speedie, Robbie Blake

Craig Hignett? Made his name in the top 2 divisions. Curtis Fleming another contender.

You could probably argue that Kyle Lafferty, having played for Rangers, Northern Ireland, and a number of top Championship sides, is as well known as Robbie Blake ever was.

For the other full back you could have Oliver Bernard. Also at the back maybe Jason de Vos over Gary Bennett. I think he made it to the Prem.

Who would have more Prem appearances - Stockdale or Schmeichel?

Probably take Danny Graham over Lafferty.

Gary Bannister was very well known to the 1980s panini enthusiasts.

I'd thought about Bernard - but is he as recognisable to your average fan as the others?

Same re: De Vos versus Bennett - De Vos moved to the SPL (Aberdeen I think?) and played for Canada - but is he as well known as Gary "definitely so" Bennett?

How about Ray Wood in goal? 178 games for Man Utd winning 2 titles.

I remember Carl Shutt signing my two lads programmes when they were mascots v Scunthorpe. He must be the only ex Darlo player who's scored in the Nou Camp in the European Cup (v VfB Stuttgart)!

A few suggestions, probably not a single on is down to them being out and out brilliant players!

Arthur Wharton - not many other Darlington players have statues?
Clint Marcelle - he was worse than rubbish with us, but he was a long standing Trinidad & Tobago international, probably 3rd most famous Tobagan behind Dwight Yorke and Stern John
Paul Robinson - made a bit of a name for himself in the whole Ruud Gullit/Alan Shearer debacle
Kevin Kyle - similar to Lafferty as Spyman mentioned, north of the border fame and again recently because he has a 'proper' job now and apparantely that is newsworthy.

Mention of the European Cup reminds me that Roger Davies was sent off in the semi-final playing for Derby against Juventus

John Hope can still be seen at the beginning of each MOTD being beaten by George Best's finish after skinning half of Sheffield Utd defence. Also from that era, Jeff Wealands played quite a few times for Man U

Let's not forget Ross Turnbull will have a Champion League winners medal from bench duties when Chelsea won about 3 years ago

Keith Gillespie is another that's been missed. One of Northern Ireland's most capped player and a decade in the premiership.

Frank Gray was in the original post, here's a stat about him (straight off Wikipedia) the first player to play in European Cup Finals for 2 different English clubs.

Oh, and how about Mike Bassett? Do fictional players count?

Not wishing to embark on a history lesson, there is a period of our past which is often overlooked when discussing our famous players. That is the period of 1939-1946 when league's were arranged on a regional basis and teams had to beg, steal and borrow players to turn out for them.
Anyone who pulls on the famous black and white hoops in a competitive game is for me a Darlo player.
During this period we had many full international players in our colours, some like Bob Thyne (Scotland) were registered with us and others were "guest" players.
Wilf Copping a half back from Leeds with 20 England caps
Cyril Sidlow a Welsh International keeper played many times.
Charlie Stubbs of West Ham was an inside forward who played several matches for us.
Jimmy Mullen won 12 England caps when not playing for Wolves or us.
Bill Nicholson full back , was a stalwart of our defence for a year, before going back to Spurs to become their famous manager.
Most famous of all was Wor Jackie, who guested on one notable occasion.
His cousin from Leeds also called Jackie Milburn was a regular in our defence at the time.
Notable scores in this era Darlo 8-0 Boro. Darlo 8-2 Newcastle. Sunderland1-5 Darlo.
One game in 1945 we had 3 full British internationals in our line up.
Crowds weren't bad either averaging around 7-8000.
This is part of our history, this is why we are DARLINTON F.C. and not darlington1883

Banktopp is right. We tend to select players from our own memory. But there were good days and famous faces long before any of us were born. That's why it is so important we eventually get our real name, Darlington FC, back.
