Central Midfielders

Still feel like theres a need for central midfielder for now, however it prompted a discussion with others about central midfielders over recent times.

Weve had good players in most positions, some gone onto better things
Goalkeepers: Stockdale, Preece, Pollitt, Russell, Teuvo, Lucas
Defenders: De Vos, Gregan, Appleby, Liddle, Austin (best fb ive seen?), Burn
Forwards: Gabbers, Abbott, Clarke, Blake, Robinson

Ive been going since 1990 and i & others couldnt really think of anyone that would hold in the same regard. Is this unfair or we always been weaker in that position? Im sure some people will have opinions but does seem we not been blessed there

Franz Burgmeier wasn't bad at all, but can't remember his exact position?

Tait, Gill, Gray, Ravenhill, Kennedy off the top of my head.

Mark Hine and Andy Toman were very good at the time.

From my experience gray and bannister were both very good. But Kennedy wasn't amazing, only when the sky cameras were on.

Bannister is a good shout.

Hows about Ritchie Foran, Ricky Ravenhill and Steve Gaughan

Im not actually sure how good Gaughan was I but I remember him fondly, did he get a cracker v pools at home one year? I guess you could say Foran was a forward.

All in all I think Quaker0006 is right, we have never been blessed with too many.

I always think we have had good keepers over the years, maybe they just got worked more ;-)

Played left wing

Gray obviously played at a higher level but probably seen him on his way down. Others were ok but wouldnt put them into a list with ones originally quoted

In response to the original post Scott Wiseman seems to have done ok after Darlo . I agree with DFC about Kennedy, he seemed to do his best stuff when the cameras were here.

Jason Kennedy and Rob Purdie were two of my favourites. The next two are maybe a little more controversial.

Brian Atkinson - very consistent for a number of years, kept the ball well without being spectacular.
Adrian Webster - I have this memory of him being absolutely fantastic for a period of time.

A number of players who clearly had class but we got them on their way down were Craig Hignett, Neil Maddison, Martin Gray and Michael Cummins.

I did think of Webster, although i dont think he played that many games for us and really is not in the class of those mentioned in the opening post.

I remember him being a very good player, technically, and physically he was just a bit mental. I know he had issues at Darlo and also went on too have a fight in the A League in Australia on the pitch with a team mate.

He still plays in the region doesn't he?

Something obviously wasn't quite right with Webster. My memory is a bit hazy of that time and I was quite young at the time which distorts your perception of a player.

Nobody going for Clark Keltie then? Feels like ages since we had a thread on debating whether he was any good or not!

Beat me to it with Sproates (think that was the spelling), always looked a class above the division we were playing in.

Webster has a trial for Darlo in per season last season. Now plays for bishop Auckland after a spell at Newton aycliffe I think.

He also played before 1990 which is the time span the post is covering!!

I'm surprised that Bannister has only had a passing mention. I thought he was outstanding.

Didn't Sean Gregan/Matty Appleby have a spell in centre midfield as well? I was too young at the time to know how good they were but it got them moves to higher levels.
