Maybe AJ on a free? lol. Seriously, has anyone new been training with us etc? Doesn't look like we have any problems on the playing budget though!

Fatty asks are we getting Messi.
Things have been getting very messy since AJ left. More likely to be Roy Keane I would have thought as he's obviously out of favour with SAF

We already have the best 2 wingers in the league with purewal as back up so probably more CM.super_les_mcjannet wrote:According to Echo today.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
I'm guessing it'll be a CM. i was at Curzon (1st game this season) and we were really poor in the middle of the park and i was told it wasn't the worst this season & that games like Ramsbottom were much worse.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
I agree but last season we had 4 wingers in Thompson, Emms, Nicholls and Hedley, if one wasn't having a great impact on the game we had impact subs. This season we miss that player who comes from the bench and gets at the opposition with fresh legs, Moore done it at Clitheroe. Some away games it would be better to have Moore to come on after keeping it tight for 55 mins etc or another winger to swap for Moore/Thompson etc.princes town wrote:We already have the best 2 wingers in the league with purewal as back up so probably more CM.super_les_mcjannet wrote:According to Echo today.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
Dale Hopson was being strongly talked about a couple of weeks back.
Not getting to much game time at Huddersfield and only contracted until 1st Jan.
Would be a good asset, and window for him.

Hold on. I saw only one post about this. A completely left field comment which might have even been from you?tezza wrote:Dale Hopson was being strongly talked about a couple of weeks back.

Robbie Painter then responded with a Huddersfield match report from the day before with Hopson detailed and mentioned that by all account he seems to be developing well at Huddersfield.

In fact I think Hopson should be looking at a restraining order should he ever return because looking further back to September last year...

Additionally, Hopson is not really the sort of player we're lacking, by all accounts.
Edwards seems to be flavour of the month with Gray, but sounds like unless he has Leon Scott alongside him we struggle with the physical element in midfield.
There seems to be no news on Wheldon, and Scott is strong cover at left back.
So my guess would be we're either looking at a strong defensive/physical presence in central midfield, allowing Scott to play left-back, or we're looking at a left-back, so Scott can play in the middle.
Hopson is (or was) a diminutive attacking midfielder, by the sounds of it similar to Edwards.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
Hopson was one of the few shining lights in our last professional season.
I like others at the time were interested in where he went to, particularly as i thought a fee appropriate. ( i think he may have suffered a stress fracture at season end)
I knew he was at Huddersfield and getting some attention, but by no means a regular.
His name has been mentioned in certain circles, is all i was saying

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
Edwards is your typical box to box central midfielder. After spending his first few games getting match fit and adjusting to the pace of this league (rather than the non-contact slower academy/reserve stuff he was used to at boro) he is starting to look like an excellent signing.Spyman wrote:Hopson is (or was) a diminutive attacking midfielder, by the sounds of it similar to Edwards.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
I've not seen him play, and not doubting how good a signing he is - just going by what I've read on here he (or we, as a team), seem to benefit from having Scott in the middle when he plays.Robbie Painter wrote:Edwards is your typical box to box central midfielder. if you have not seen him play i fail to see how you can comment.
Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
I can comment based on what I've read on here. As long as I'm clear that that is the basis of my comment, I don't see the problem.feethams flyer wrote:if you have not seen him play i fail to see how you can comment.
If I have read multiple times that we have looked weak in the middle of the park recently, and that this has coincided with the introduction of Edwards, but that when Scott has played in the middle he and we have looked stronger, I'd say that regardless of what I've seen - it is a pretty easy conclusion to draw.
But thanks for your input.

Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
I don't think you are far of the mark Spyman, Scott gives him the freedom or reassurance to be able to push on and play balls knowing there is a brick wall there to mop up, I also like Scott int he CM as he makes some great runs forward and can keep the ball well when dribbling and beating players.Spyman wrote:I can comment based on what I've read on here. CF? Shawry what do you know sir?
We need a Jason Kennedy, unfortunately I don't think you get many of them at this level.

I can confirm that Brian Atkinson has not yet followed this potential new player on twitter. Therefore I haven't got a clue who it is!

Someone looking a lot like Dale Hopson was in the bar before the game when we played Curzon, Martin Grey then came in and took him away half an hour before kick off.
Re: Possible new signing for Saturday
Having read several opinions on tonight, it looks like I was spot on regarding Scott/Edwards.feethams flyer wrote:if you have not seen him play i fail to see how you can comment.
One day you'll understand how someone can comment on something they haven't seen first hand.
That Hitler... he was a c***, right?

"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883
