Apparently some Liverpool fans threw on a beach ball and Bent's shot hit the top of it and deflected in. Should be quite funny, don't like Liverpool at all :D

They weren't sure whether to let it stand or not, but like Bent said, its a liverpool ball and its in the liverpool box, the liverpool players should be clearing it if they are bothered.

Course it should stand. If the ref was going to do anything about it, he should have stopped the game and removed it from the pitch well before this happened.

And lets not forget that the fucking scouse retards shouldn't have thrown the ball on the pitch in the first place.

Precisely.

Some guy on the radio said it should technically be a drop ball, but if they had the chance to clear it, and they obviously left it so that it might get in the way of a sunderland player through, then the goal should stand.

It was some ginger kid that chucked the ball on.

Was watching the match live, fantastic goal. Reina didn't have a clue which ball to go for.

Having seen that, I have to say, the Scousers have only themselves to blame.

Bunch of pillocks.

Shieldsy quotes Bent-he's hardly gonna say that the goal shouldn't stand.

Also Liverpool had no chance to move it.It blew onto the pitch from behind the goal during the build up to the goal.Unless Reina just ignored the attack to move it then there was no chance to move it.Just cos one fan was a dick the team didn't deserve that luck.

If a team lost a goal just cos they had a fan who was a prat,we'd lose plenty more goals than most.

There have been Liverpool fans on the radio and on football forums saying...

1) Sunderland should have 'gifted' liverpool a goal after referee made a mistake
2) Sunderland should offer to replay the game as they were unsporting for not gifting Liverpool a goal. (Quoting Arsenal's replay for unsporting conduct)
3) Liverpool should appeal to the FA/UEFA to get the game annulled and a replay made at a convenient date (no doubt when Gerrard and Torres are fit...)

Not like the whinging scousers to be out in force is it...

Sheffield United will probably end up sueing the beach bal for loss of earnings and such like before too long.

Though it will be amusing to see what league the referee next officiates, as to be honest he ignored one of the most basic rules. Its his job to stop the game until the offending article is removed.

The only reason I can see for the goal actually standing is that the officials thought it deflected off the defender, rather than the beach ball.

Jeff The Ref has had a few choice words about this on the Beeb site.

Personally, I think if they disallowed it the FA would create a huge problem for referees. It's not hard to get balloons into a football stadium, and every time the opposition look dangerous you could bung a load of them onto the pitch and the ref has to stop the game. What seems to be being overlooked is that by all accounts Liverpool were completely outplayed yesterday. Losing to a balloon should be the least of their worries.

Where would it stop?

If fans chuck paper up in the air and they land on the pitch, can the goalkeeper claim it's outside interference and the game has to be stopped? Ludicrous.

Would they have complained if it had deflected a goalbound shot wide? Don't think so. They should take both sides of it, its not like an extra player for Sunderland, its gonna be the same for both sides so its no use complaining about it, especially as it was their own fans!!

Which is exactly what Benitez said.He must surely know he has one of the thinnest squads in the league outside his first choice 11.

If they turned up without Gerrard,Torres and Mascherano then I'd quietly fancy we'd even give them a run for their money now we've hit form!!!!

why do the top leagues insist on having the worst referees

it should be a rule that before you can ref in the premiership you should know the rules of the game

Why? Is it harder to spot a foul in a Premiership game than a League 2 game? Course its not. There is no reason why someone who isn't good enough to ref a Premiership match should be allowed to ref any professional match.
