34 votes League Two - Eriksson close to Notts County move
Eurosport - Tue, 21 Jul 14:11:00 2009

Sven-Goran Eriksson appears poised to make a sensational return to English football with League Two side Notts County.

..The former England manager is thought to be in talks over an executive role that would give him total control of football affairs, with manager Ian McParland working under him.

The Magpies were taken over last week by Arab consortium Munto Finance, who aim to take the club into the Premier League within 10 years.

County are the oldest professional club in the world and founder members of the Football League, but had slid into obscurity since last playing in the top flight in 1992, and finished 19th in the fourth tier last season.

Peter Trembling, the club's new chairman and chief executive, said after announcing the takeover deal earlier this month. "I firmly believe this is a momentous day for all those involved with Notts County, particularly the club's loyal supporters."

County refused to deny they were in talks with Eriksson when contacted by the BBC on Tuesday morning.

Eriksson's agent Athole Still refused to comment on the reports.

Eriksson has been jobless since Mexico sacked him in April, and has also been linked with the vacant manager's position at Portsmouth.

This 'Director of Football' title always makes me chuckle. What the hell do they do??

I cant imagine McFarland being too pleased bout this mind. I guess it does create a bit of buzz round nottingham and will get a few more in few the turnstiles though. I noticed County had a bid turned down for Jack Lester the other day and I recall someone saying they might be signing that absolute knob Lee Hughes. Clearly they have the cash and will be the team to beat next season.

I've always been uncertain of Directors of Football.
There always seems to be some kind of problems shortly before or after they're appointed.

No, why should this story have to worry us???

Our days of being a relatively big fish in L2 (like the last 5 seasons) are gone now, we've had our chance and for various reasons (poor crowds, odd bad results, injuries/refs, Houghton's budgeting etc...) blew it. Its back to thinking/being realistic and starting again on a sustainable mid/lower league level - not a bad thing really considering we nearly didn't have a club at all a month or two ago!!!

Notts County have got lucky and have been taken over by what appears to be a group intent on taking them right to the top. Though they'll have the money they'll be there to be shot down and what was it again, Championship in 5 years??? Heard that all before somewhere......!!!

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Would this be an appropriate appointment, though? Can Sven, who's used to coaching big time charlies, be able to coach League 2 players? Bit like getting the headmaster of Eton college to go and take over at the Ridings school.

We've got nothing to worry about but the Notts County female staff & WAGS probably have.

Does Ravenhill still have the phone number of that locksmith on North Road who specialises in chastity belts?

Silly publicity stunt. This has made me less bothered about Notts' new owners as they are clearly a bit crackers.
