Campaign against text speak on here.

Post by wylam_rangers » Sun Jul 19, 2009 6:03 pm

Personally I'm getting pissed off with trying to decipher text speak on here. It's bad enough with dodgy grammar and typos - but we all make mistakes late at night especially fuelled by red wine/real ale/amber nector/fine malt.

I'd like to start a campaign for readable posts on here but in the interests of democracy those who disagree with me are welcome to state their opinion. Unfortunately I probably won't understand a word - or should that be "expression".

No, no people can't talk how they like. They can talk properly, or they can fuck off.

I'm proud to say that I've never sent a text in my life. Which puts me at a distinct disadvantage when trying to translate some of the posts on here. :?

I hate text speak as much as the next person but unfortunately we're moving into a generation where everything has to be quicker and shortcuts have to be found to even the proper use of the English language. Fine on a mobile phone where you are ACTUALLY restricted, but not so great when it starts spreading to other arenas.

It bugs me but there'll be plenty of people posting on here from their mobiles so they'll use the text speak. We can choose to ignore them though ;)

No, if I don't like it I'll tell those responsible. Therefore clowns who use text talk will get it, over and over and over. They'll be fucking off before me and rightly so.

What has ownership of the board got to do with it?

What the fuck has my attendance or non attendance yesterday got to do with my views on text talk? Did you go? Not that it is relevant.

If people expect a well thought out response to their posts then they should take the time to construct a post with a proper, well thought out structure in proper English.

I for one, and I suspect others on this board, haven't got the time or the inclination to work out what people are saying.

The irony  ...I'm not bothered about it. I can understand it. I'd prefer it if people did use something resembling proper english, but nothing can be done to stop people using text language if they want.

Quakerz, I have never nor will ever use text speak on here as i dont like it myself. But what you dont understand is some of these text talkers are bits of kids.

If you dont like it, dont reply to it. We all have the right to say whatever we want on here, and we dont need permission off you or anyone else.

If you think telling a kid to fuck off is constructive, well good luck to you.

I will support anything that brings an end to text speak on a message board.
It is unfortunately a sign of the times, a trap that society is falling into. Posters are not charged per word/letter on this forum, so type the words in full please.

even the thicko's at my old school who couldn't even muster a solitary CSE in woodwork used to get it right!

I'm in support of irradicating such revolting antics. And it is revolting. IT's horrid to read, and belittling to the peers, as apparently we do not deserve proper sentences, or fully rounded words.

There is no need for it. I fear that in 20 years time, not only will people not be able to write using their hands, but we will have a nation speaking pigeon english.

In case there is still someone counting, I'm for good English.

How about a thread at the top logging the worst spelling errors or least decipherable posts?
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

I think the campaign is clearly in the lead now. I'll leave the final score to Darlo_Pete who sadly has very little to do on here.
