problem is they sit in pairs leaving great swaithes of the stadium unmanned, first half the ballboy at the front of my block never left his chair, even when the ball was out of play just yards from him

We have always had the worst ball boys in the world. The qualification criteria must read something like:

Are you under 3'6? Yes
Do you love dithering about? Yes
Do you have a clue about football? No

I am sure I read somewhere that Maddos coaching course at hummersknott on Saturday mornings then bring the kids to the match to be ballboys, so midweek matches may be short staffed with no extra kids.
