Previous "Big" signings
Previous "Big" signings
Was just reading the "big signings" thread and felt inspired to start a post to discuss some once big name players who Darlo signed and at the time everyone thought they'd do an epic job, and they turned out to be a bit crap.
I'll start with a couple...
Dean Windass - I, probably like many, thought the big man would net a dozen goals for us when we signed him, and not only that, really lead/inspire the weak Darlo team. Oh how I was wrong.
Mark Ford - Was once the "New David Batty" for Leeds in the mid 90's. Signed for Darlo and the wheels truely fell off. Last time I saw him he was collecting tickets on the trains in Leeds. When I asked him about his Darlo days he got a bit upset and started ranting about Reynolds.
Other names that spring to mind; Hignett, Matty Appleby (2nd spell), Noel Whelan, Phil Stamp...
Anyone else care to add to the Darlo dissapointments? Perhaps we can get enough for a full starting 11.

Clyde Wijnhard
Alun Armstrong
Bobby Petta
Curtis Fleming
Hodgy certainly liked his big name signingsa...to be fair Wijnhard did a good job, and Armstrong wasn't half bad. Neither was Fleming actually.

Noel Whelan, tremendous servant to the club I'm sure you'll all agree.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

Jimmy Case and Neil McNab. Admittedly they were about 50 when they signed for us but they were still "names" at that time
Waiting for Raj to shaft them!

We taught him everything and then he blew it. So sad

Re: Previous "Big" signings
Craig Russell, did really well at Sunderland, came here and well, he was just useless
Re: Previous "Big" signings
Wijnhard was a very good signing. Armstrong and Hignett were both very good when fit. Fleming was decent as well.

We will be playing at the arena again next season - fact.
Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Re: Previous "Big" signings
Hignett was different class when fit. The team that has him, Armstrong and Wijnhard in was very good to watch going forward.
I'd say the 3 listed above would go into the big signings who turned out to be good, alongside arguably the best big name signing who turned out to be great - Marco Gabbiadini.

Graham Fenton was crap
Julian Joachim would probably just about make it into the decent/good big name signings list.

Going back to crap signings for those old enough to remember Roger Davies ex Derby and England striker who proved a total let down and Colin Blant ex Burnley who turned out a right clogger

Nick Cusak. one time record signing. got relegated.
Gavin Worboys. Big heap of shite

Was Worboys a big signing? Dunno where else he'd played. To be fair to him he did get a 90th minute at Scarborough in the 95/96 Wembley season shortly before he departed.Fatty eats roadkill wrote:Nick Cusak. one time record signing. got relegated.

The ultimate 'big' signing has to be Steve McMahon, except it wasn't 'the' steve McMahon, it was a 6ft clogger who literally couldn't pass or head the ball!

Yeah he was real quality and replaced probably alan kamara who swept the player of the year awards.aveda wrote:And John Craggs who did a similar job from full backjoejaques wrote:On the "Good" big signings list I would have to include Frank Gray.
Gary Bannister was possibly our best signing, other big signings Jimmy Case albeit very brief and Bob Lee who was dreadful....oh and remember Willy Young signed him just in time for the match at Blackpool in 84 but he couldn't play due to blisters!...good player tho.
The Blackpool game was probably the best 0-0 game i have watched and John Craggs performance was outstanding

Worboys- I'm sure we paid cash for him. Therefore in my book he was a big signing considering we don't normally hand over the readiesNimrod wrote:Was Worboys a big signing? I can't believe I actually remember this, but I've just checked and I'm right. You put Bobby Petta in your "best Darlington FC team"...AndyPark wrote:Mor Diop, his name just sounded ace.

Re: Previous "Big" signings
Neil Heaney didn't maybe do as much as he could have, mainly due to our disgrace of a pitch, though he probably falls into both the good and bad "big" signings category - especially when i saw the coin he was on.
Good "big" signings - Marco and Bannister. Aspin impressed me too, as did Carl Shutt but they were both knocking on a bit.
