just been reading about him getting sent off for Barnet yesterday - what surprised me more was his squad number......1!........cant remember seeing it before on an outfield player?

Norberto Alonso and Ossie Ardiles both wore No. 1 for Argentina.

It's rare but there are a few more as well.

Weren't they were given 1 in capital order of World Cup squads?

Can't remember seeing a player so self-indulgent as to give themselves an outfield number 1, although there are probably a few out there.

Argentinian squads numbers were assigned alphabateically in the world cup in 1982, Ardiles had the no1 shirt and he was a midfielder. The only exception to the alphabetical order was Maradona who kept the no10 shirt.

That's right. Same reason with the 1978 squad.
