Re: Simian stranglers

If, as seems the case on other threads, our situation demands that we freshen things up by changing managers to get the "bounce effect", and we can't afford to release our manager to unemployment, why not consider a manager swap with another struggling side. And it might tick the box of many fans th...

Re: Darlington v Hereford

Seen a lot on Twitter over the weekend, I didn't go to the game as I was in Grimsby. But seems to me, that whatever TW does. He can't possibly win. I agree it's frustrating to be having so many draws, but we need to look at the bigger picture and understand we are no longer a big fish in a little p...

This Time Last Year

Given the disappointments of the current season, I was wondering how it compared to last season at this point. At 17 games, as we are at present, we had 5 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats, so 21 points from a possible 51. We had scored 20 goals and shipped 22. Goal difference - 2. So one point different ...

Re: Darlington v Hereford

I would add to the above list of chances that I thought that the tackle on Trotman just before we scored the second goal looked very much like a foul and a penalty. The amount of anger shown by the Hereford players seemed to be on the basis that Trotman had dived, but there was no appeal by our lad,...

I'd select a trip to Yaxley as I lived there many moons ago, and wouldn't mind seeing how the place looks now.

Going back to music to run out to - given the disquiet from some quarters over our budget for this year why not play Money For Nothing.

Or if I were to go back in time, as some have, why not the Joe Meek classic, Telstar - not for any reason other than it's a great upbeat tune.

Re: Darlington V Guiseley

Despite being a season ticket holder Saturday was my first game in a while and I thought it was a decent watch for a 0-0. I’m not quite sure why people seem to be so down, upset or quick to have a go at the players (both at the game and online). First half I can think of 5 or 6 opportunities where ...

Re: Leamington v Darlington

Just seen the highlights and it looks as if we weren't perfect in the first half but were showing greater fluidity than in the two recent wins. Whilst hoping that this will encourage more free-flowing football that we know the team is capable of, we clearly can't forget the need to defend well. We a...

Re: Leamington v Darlington

Not wishing to deflect everything from what has proved to be a deeply disappointing end result, but looking on the up side, after the departure of Styche, there does seem to be evidence that we still have a goal scoring threat in Harvey and Ainge.

Re: FC United V Darlington match thread

Just looked up the Cambridge game stats and see that the goals were scored by Don Burluraux, Stan Webb, Eric Young, Colin Sinclair and Billy Yates. Some memorable performers there. Sinclair was a sort of Styche character who could win a game almost by force of will, and Stan Webb was powerful in the...

Re: FC United V Darlington match thread

The confidence issue has been referred to by both TW and the players and it seems clear that with that and potential backlash for not beating the bottom club under the most extremely favourable circumstances the players might be excused for not knowing if they should stick or twist when a goal and a...

Re: FC United V Darlington match thread

I wasn't there today but it sounds as if this was the kind of nervy performance you might expect from a side that is low on confidence, which will make even the simple things seem difficult. Rather like Leamington last year, more than the performance we needed the luck and the result, and that much ...

Re: FC United V Darlington match thread

This game worries me! We should no doubt win it BUT the scope for things to go wrong is big. As we have already seen this season against Brackley and Telford it is often easier to play with freedom when expectations are lower. In the position we have today there may be more of a fear of losing that...

Re: Darlington v Bradford (Park Avenue)

Don’t disagree that Elliott has been the best of a very ordinary bunch of signings, apart from odd flashes, at best.......but what 1 out of 7 decent signings is ok then? Does TW interview fill you with any confidence at all that he knows what to do to put it right. No, apart from it’s back to the d...

Re: Darlington v Bradford (Park Avenue)

Came away deflated after that game, which is not me. Not just as it was another defeat at home, and out of the cup again, but the big loss of money, (not sure the players realise how much the fans had to dig deep to pay their wages and will have to do it again next year unless we can raise cash by ...

Re: Darlington v Bradford (Park Avenue)

Knowing that Ainge was signed to play alongside Styche, if both are available I would think it more likely that today's team would line up as a 4-4-2. I agree that the spearhead formation suggested is the one which works best, but I feel that does require Syers behind the striker and if he isn't ava...

Re: Southport v Darlington

Having watched the match highlights I was surprised that what was being talked of as a stone wall penalty for Darlo was dismissed by the commentary team as certainly not a spot kick. From what I saw it appeared to be a good shout but they had the benefit of seeing it as the ref would have in real ti...

As the last two performances seem to have convinced at least some of the doubters that they may have been too quick to find fault with Hughes it would appear that there is a vacancy for pantomime villain for the vent of opprobrium when things aren't going ticking boo. Caton has already played a fine...

As was usually said in the management training videos - "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions". Why is having more than one way of setting up to play the game proving to be seen as a problem? Surely having the possibility of having a plan B is a positive. How often has it been considered that...

How important is Wheatley to the way we play? Interested to hear thoughts. It doesn't seem a huge coincidence to me that we are a much better side with him in it. We really could use some kind of back up to him, if we can find one. Have to agree about his importance to the side. I noticed several t...

Re: Darlington V Altrincham Match thread

I think for Ashton we need to do what we did post-Leamington last season - go 4-5-1 (or 4-2-3-1). That worked really well, there was a good transition between defence and attack, nobody really spoke about us being over-run and our form after Leamington was 7-4-3 IIRC. Something along the lines of -...

Re: TW tactics

Well if the feelings being expressed in this thread are suggesting that TW is hell bent on playing open attacking football at the expense of results then perhaps they would prefer a more dour, hard-nosed brand of football. It seems that an opportunity to get back to this style has just opened up.
