Re: My first game

One of the very first games I saw lingers long in the memory. Quakers 5 Chester 1. 19th November 1960. The match was played on a Saturday afternoon in fog so dense that the goals were not visible from any viewing point on the East or West stands or the side terraces. The recently installed floodligh...

Re: LIverpool winning goal ~ Remind you of another goal?

That was my immediate thought too. Always happy to be reminded of the Wembley win and goals stemming from a rebound off the top of the crossbar are not seen often. One big difference: the Mansfield keeper was not massively at fault, if at all. Pickford commits a real howler. But Southgate will still...

Re: Best player against Darlo?

Rodney Marsh was already a fine player when he played for QPR against us twice in 1967 in Division 3, about the same time he played a big part in Rangers winning the League Cup.

Re: Advice regarding the Harrogate Town away game on Saturda

Having seen the earlier advice about the large numbers expected at the turnstiles I have purchased tickets online and printed them. I have just phoned Harrogate Town hoping for confirmation that people with tickets already in their hand bypass the queue of people paying cash. This is not so accordin...

Re: FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round Draw - Mon 24th Aug

Older fans may recall 15th October 1887. FA Cup First Round. Preston North End 26 Hyde 0. Still the highest margin in English first class football.

Re: The Pink

Slightly off topic..but people who remember the Pink will also recall it was impossible in those low tech days pre Twitter days to get any news of latest scores or results in midweek games until a late sports desk on the Light Programme (predecessor of Radio 2). Television was even worse.. You were ...

Re: DARLO vs TEAMS IN THE CURRENT PREMIER LEAGUE

Darlo v Manchester United at Feethams 26 November 1990. ....well it was an early round of the FA Youth Cup, so doesn't really count. The score from memory was 8 or 9 - 0. What is well remembered is that a 16 year old Ryan Giggs scored 5 of them. so that rather gives away which team won! Sean Gregan ...

Re: Mossley v Darlo

Mossley is on the real ale trail....websites describing this particular pub crawl recommend The Brittania. Right opposite the station apparently.

Re: Mossley v Darlo

Getting a good pint in Mossley. The railway station is at the bottom of the steep hill that leads up to Mossley Top where the ground is situated. Last season there were quite a few of us enjoying good real ale in The Fleece on the main street at Mossley Top - the street that skirts the small market ...

Prescot Cables Beer Festival coincides with our game

For those of us who enjoy sampling real ale when following the team away, (and I have noticed this applies to quite a few) Saturday's game at Prescot Cables comes up trumps. There is a beer festival at the ground from 1.30 pm with free entry for anyone attending the game. I copy below part of the no...

Re: The "Third in Line" to the throne -

....as the poster of the rumour that Andrew becomes first in line if Charles dies before his mum, I am happy to concede that my reasoning was bollocks. Those who pointed out that William and his heirs have forever bumped Andrew etc down the list are right. The eldest son of the eldest son will take ...

Re: The "Third in Line" to the throne -

The 2011 changes to the laws of succession do not apply retrospectively to people born before the law changed. So if Charles were to die before HM The Queen, Andrew, as the eldest surviving son, becomes heir apparent in preference to his older sister Anne. In this event we can probably forget Willia...

Malcolm Scott

During commentary on Test Match Special this afternoon Geoff Boycott was recalling his first ever game for Yorkshire in the early sixties which was against Northants. He recalled in particular coming up against the Northants slow left arm bowler Malcolm Scott. I would have liked to ask Boycott if he...

Re: Who is your team after Darlo?

According to Wikipedia George Switzer played only in United's youth team alongside Giggs, Beckham, Scholes etc. Fergie also noticed he was vertically challenged and released him for that reason! Hence the move to Darlo. According to the same source Switzer spent most of his career at Hyde Utd and cu...

Re: Who is your team after Darlo?

I have supported both Quakers and Manchester United since 1960 and as I now live in Leeds get to see both quite frequently. Obviously the fortunes of the two clubs have taken very different paths but I assure you it is possible to be passionate about both especially when one has childhood roots in b...
