Re: Knowledge

Almost certain it was v Wycombe in the dog days of McEwan's tenure, when we didn't win for months then Murray came in and we beat Colchester 7-3. It was definitely a 0-0, we were definitely there, it was definitely in autumn '93 and the only game which fits those criteria is one v Wycombe where we p...

Re: Darlington v Kidderminster

Anyone who thinks travelling the distance from Darlo to Kidderminster entitles them to shout misogynistic stuff at a female steward might - and as if this should need pointing out - like to do a thought experiment whereby that steward is their mum/ wife/ sister/ daughter/ girlfriend. How would you r...

Re: New manager poll

'North East' = 'you got Tyne Tees rather than Yorkshire in the 1980s/ 1990s' as far as I'm concerned or 'if you have a Football League team, they get covered on Look North'* There's definitely a slice of North Yorkshire running round from Swaledale across to Northallerton, round the Cleveland coast ...

Re: Who would you like to see take over?

Chris Hardy. I don't think we can realistically recruit from the same level, not with the ground the way it is and our inability to offer anyone a substantially better budget. If that was feasible and we still have any 'big club' pull I'd have said it might be worth having a look at Alun Armstrong....

Re: Who would you like to see take over?

So we're all glad to get rid of MG's "if you don't like it f**k off" mentality and it's then suggested to bring in Alan White... Like I said, I've never really got the impression White's on-field persona matches his off-field persona. Could be wrong but he comes across very differently to Gray in m...

Re: Martin Gray - my recollection.

I think quite a lot of what Princes Town is saying up there is true but doesn't fully explore something which is perhaps important. While managers like Gray - and he fits a non-league stereotype, the 'man of singular vision' hauling club up from the regional leagues almost through force of will - in...

This thread is getting pretty X-Files. Knowing us, Boston will be awarded three points and then edge us out of play-off spot because of them, then we'll be all 'why didn't the league make them play the game?'

Big fan of all the Avec kits; the Cosyseal one is probably least good of them but still better than a lot of what we've had in the past. Was surprised by the Glenwood one, which I thought was going to be awful and wasn't. I use last season's to play in and it's so smart it even manages to make me - ...

Re: Worst ever Darlo player

But my personal worst ever Darlo player (and this is controversial) is Gary Chapman. He played for three seasons (when i first started watching too - it's a wonder i still go), and scored 9 goals. 9 goals in three seasons. Not even double figures! And i think three of them were against Colchester i...

Re: Worst ever Darlo player

Cusack was decent and certainly nowhere near our worst player. That would be why I put in a qualification about how he might be considered the worst in relation to value or expectation (which is surely the reason you've claimed Bernie Slaven, who was not actually awful but a huge disappointment, wa...

I think this is one of my favourite subjects I'll go for a blast from the past: Nick Pickering. (I think he was capped by England, ex-Sunderland, won the FA Cup with Coventry and then joined us in the early 90's). He was absolutely dreadful (and overweight) every time I saw him play. and cost us £9...

Re: Pick the shirts.

Every season we've had vertical stripes since I started following Darlo (93-94, 94-95 and 03-04) we've been colossally rubbish and wracked by boardroom grief, plus I associate the design with Reynolds. I only really wear the kits for playing football in (love the new one, don't love the fact that I'...

It was undoubtedly a bad, lethargic performance, and the on-pitch communication and general shape of the team were very poor, but I'd call it a bad day at the office more than anything. Even in seasons when you walk the league you have off-days, and this was one of those. I'm willing to let Thompson...

Question I've been meaning to ask for ages but have been too lazy to log in to do so: although the existing seats on the clubhouse side don't count towards grading, thanks to the usual FA wackiness, will they be open for spectators at matches and, if so, can they be used as allocated away seating fo...

1 - Dugald McCarrison getting sent off for kicking a Fulham player up the arse right in front of the linesman. 2 - A Darlo fan running out of the East Stand during a friendly against Ardiles-era Newcastle and tackling one of their players, possibly Liam O'Brien. 3 - The cat on the pitch at MK Dons i...

And I won't be wrong about crowds bouncing back to above the old "normal" upon our return either. Look at Maidstone - 20 years of being away from home and gates of 2-300. Came back and they're getting 1,500-2,000 regularly. I find that quite heartening - it shows that the addition of a bit of extra...

Sad for him. Typical Worthington decision from how I remember him at Norwich - likes box-to-box CMs. Thought McReady had the makings of a really, really good player, and hope he can keep himself in the professional game. If not, I'd like to think we'd express an interest as he would totally boss thi...

No, but seemingly the only way to really capture the imagination of our friends in the nl is to have a collection of laminated historic bus timetables so large that it requires a separate room in your house. Re: When would you have stopped supporting Darlo?

I think the point I was trying to make is that, as AFCW and to an extent FCUM have demonstrated, there's a difference between the club as a legal/ business entity and the club as an, ahem, 'spiritual' proposition. If we'd formed a breakaway club when Reynolds was screwing us over and most fans had c...

Re: When would you have stopped supporting Darlo?

Give us a human rights-abusing oligarch owner or a Nazi-saluting manager and I'd not set foot near the ground until they were gone. The Arena and the constant mismanagement didn't do me a lot of good either, and I'd find it pretty difficult to follow any more if they went back there. For my money, t...
